What areas around Knoxville are the best places to live and why?
My wife and I are considering relocating to the Knoxville area when we retire in the coming years. We thought Knoxville, Tennessee would be a good choice for the following reasons: 1.) Climate. 2.) No income tax. Here in Washington State, the total tax burden makes it the 8th highest, whereas Tennessee is ranked Number 49. 3.) Closer to family. My wife hails from Kentucky, and I have folks in New Jersey and Florida. 4.) Lower cost of living. 5.) Better politics. Call us religious conservatives. In Washington, you can vote if you're dead, in jail, and twice or more if you need more votes for your candidate. I'm sure there are more reasons, but they escape me for the moment, Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated. |

The words of Tupac hold true here: "West side is the best side".
Seriously, West Knoxville is the most upscale part of the city with the lowest crime. Its only real disadvantage is traffic. Any area of Knoxville (north, south, east, or west) is fine if you move far enough out of town. I would stay away from the areas just north and east of downtown. |

West side, specifically Farragut. Nice area and if I ever transfer to Knoxville that's where I'll be heading.

I like East Knoxville but it's older and poorer but the Old City is really trendy.
There's only really one ghetto in Knoxville and it's confined to a single street that starts with a Greyhound busstation, it's called Magnolia and people often get stabbed there. West Knoxville is upscale, growing, and has everything but the traffic is horrid. The entire reason why the highway is being expanded is to be a massive speed trap. It's literally 45mph limit when people are going 70+!! West Knoxville is good for family, check out Turkey Creek/Farragut. |

I'm happy to see that a forum like this exists. We'll be moving to Knoxville next year, so all the info we can get is appreciated.

I lived on the South side and it is nice out there. Not much crime and it is easy to get to places. They are building it up more, but there are not many places to shop and eat. Though from the south side you can easily scoot down Pellissippi Parkway and be a Turkey Creek on the West side in no time and avoid the major traffic of I-40.

I lived in East town and I still prefer East Knoxville. West Knoxville is great for more upscale dining establishments. But as has been said the traffic is awful on the West side.
