Thanks, J&Em. We are going to be back up in 3 weeks. I can hardly wait! The fact that you could go from main roads and the Wal-Mart area and within a couple of miles be in farm country is what attracted my husband and I, also. We have lived in similar communities, and love the convenience of shopping, library-visits, hospitals, etc., but within mins. be back to a beautiful country environment. I will definitely keep you posted on what we finally find, and share some of our searches with you. We had the same feeling you did once we returned home after our last, and most satisfying visit... suddenly, a blur! I think we tried to take in too much, see too many properties and didn't allow ourselves enough time. We will be in the Maryville area for a couple additional days this time so should be able to soak more in - and despite our lapses of memory - retain more of what most impresses us. Good notes - very handy. Hope you have great success yourselves. Do keep posting and you can PM me anytime. |

I sent an pm to you a few days ago. We just spent a week at our new home and other than adjusting to wet clay soil know that we made the right decision. So from a TN newbie and soon to retire teacher--welcome. |

So from a TN newbie and soon to retire teacher--welcome.[/quote/] It is great to hear that you are where you should be. (Hope you got the return PM I sent last week.) I am so pleased to hear that you are happy with your decision. The red clay of the SE comes with that decision, but try not to notice how stubborn it can be when planting your annuals! Thank you for the early welcome. I will be sure to keep you posted on our next visit in 3 weeks, although we feel that the decision is already made. Look out Knoxville traffic; here come 2 more. Hope we can stick to all of the back roads and not add to the congestion. Enjoy your new home, sister-teacher. Do you have a job lined up for this school year? Hope to meet one of these days. |

My husband and I and our two children may be moving to the area soon. He is looking at ORNL and we were considering living in Oak Ridge because of the schools and proximity to work. After reading many unpleasant things about Oak Ridge, we are now considering Maryville. We have some research to do, but can anyone tell me about how long of a commute it is from say the center of Maryville to the lab in Oak Ridge?

Have you considered the Farragut area? |

Thanks SmokyMtnGal. Farragut, just from what little we've researched, seems very expensive as far as housing goes. Think we need to steer clear of there.

If you think Farragut is expensive then Maryville City will blow your mind. I could have the same house in West Knoxville for a hundred thousand less than here in Maryville City. I love it here but once the last one graduates I am out of here. I am glad we did it though; the schools have been tremendous.

Only the area within the city limits is zoned for Maryville city schools. There are plenty of Maryville addresses that are not in the city. When one is coming from outside the area it is important to look at that. Generally the 37803 and 37801 zip is mostly in the city proper, but 37804 is outside the city. There are reasonably priced houses in Maryville, but one just doesn't get as much house for the money in the city as the county; generally speaking.

Hey SMG, are the city schools alot better than county? I think we're leaning towards living outside the city but I do want my kids to go to good schools. tia
