Hi,
I know that racism occurs in everystate. However, Maryville has a 2+% black population (census 2000).My sister in law informed me that my boyfriend (who is black) would feel uncomfortable with these statistics (but they are 10 years old) I was wondering if this area is very racist toward blacks. My family has just moved to Maryville and I would like to visit them. I am in an interracial relationship and am worried about how ppl will treat him...any info

Generally speaking areas with the least amount of racial diversity particularly with whites and blacks tend to have the least amount of racial tension/racism from my experiences. The most racist areas I’ve been to IMO were southern California, Michigan, Virginia, and Florida and the least racist IMO have been Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and yes Montana and Idaho.
I worked with a couple black guys from south carolina when I was in Montana and they said they were blown away by how much better they were treated in Montana compared to South Carolina.

I very much agree with Mikey. That has been my exact same experience, too. The only time that probably wouldn't be correct is in some of the very small backwaters of some places, be it Indiana or Kentucky, etc.

But Maryville is a very large town, right near Knoxville, and the folks are extremely nice. I can't imagine there being any problems.

Hello. This is 2010 not 1910. Are there other places in this great big county you are worried about visiting because of skin color? Im sure people in Maryville wont give a flip what color your boyfriend is. They might however raise an eyebrow that you prejudge them based on population statistics.

Ive lived in Dayton Ohio, 43% black, and Vicksburg MS, 60% black, and have encountered more racism there than in TN. Although you run the risk of encountering idiots anywhere you go, Im sure you and your bf will find people in the area very friendly. Dont worry about it and have a wonderful visit.

I live in Maryville. If he is nice to me then I am nice to him. The reverse is true too in case he is not nice. Oh, and this applies to anyone, regardless of skin color.

Maryville is part of the Knoxville metro and 1 in 5 Knoxvilllians are African American. You won't be dealing with a remote Appalachian town.

Gotta be honest. I have lived in Maryville for about 15+ years, and unfortuntely most are very racist. There are usually only a few blacks in school and they are singled out and harrassed. Sadly enough, my boyfriend has a black friend around 10 whom he calls a "half-breed" (half black and white) and gets laughs from his other friends. Many my age are the same way. The boy seems to have accepted it and laughs along, but it hurts me. Many use the N word profusely, and *extremely* hate bi-racial couples.

I am so sorry if this is offensive, but I just want to tell you the truth. I am 20-ish so this is just my perspective: I am sure it is a lot better among older folks

Appreciate your honesty. I don't doubt it at all. Deleted But I'm not saying it's just Maryville, it's all these rural areas in east TN. You have to stay near the biggest cities for more tolerance/acceptance. Just the way it is.

Default Worried mother

My husband has been offered a great job opportunity, including housing and some other great perks. However moving to another state is scary, some of the homes we've been shown are in maryville,tn while the homes and area seem very beautiful i hate to sound this way but,I am Hispanic should i be concerned for our kids and us as far as racism. Please any advice will be greatly appriciated.
