I am driving from Kentucky to South Carolina this coming week. I used google maps to look at variosu routes because of the rock slide on I-40. One route is to take I-40 to Newport and then various back roads until I get around the rock slide (The roads mentioned being US-25, US-70, State TN-9) How difficult are these roads in that area? I am not a fan of curvy roads and my blood pressure does not enjoy close in driving. How much extra time would those roads cause to be added to my trip?

Should I just go to the Tri-cities and head south on I-26 until I hit Asheville?

US 25/70 is mainly two lanes from Newport to I-26 just north of Asheville. It is thru the mountains but not bad curvey mountain road in my opinion. Going that way will probably add a half an hour to your trip. Going up I-81 and down I-26 will add about an hour to your trip. These are just estimates as I've been both ways but never really timed the trip.

The back way from newport to Asheville is VERY curvy and steep near Hot Springs. Not a bad drive, just easier made in the daytime.
