Default Seymour-off the main road

Maybe Seymour just isn't the place for you. I have neighbors from there.

Try to work things out for yourself. You may not be able to sell in this market! Get out when you can to other places and find things that lift your spirits. Church always helps - I have never heard a sermon that didn't do something positive. There are great parks and restaurants. Don't give up. Shop!
I went back to find this thread not to comment on what has already been said but I wanted to add something about the location and my experience. Off of route 411/Sevierville Road or Pike -- there is so much beauty in the land around Seymour. Just everything you might think of in a picture of Tennessee...fertile, rolling hills, ponds, with the mountains there, too. Very well taken care of throughout. I guess the older you get the more you look to the natural beauty of things and how people take that and develop it positively or not. The person I have been dealing with in that area tells us there are lots of people from other places moving in there. I hope it stays as lovely as it is and I see no reason it won't. At this time of year, you owe yourself a drive through the area off of 411 on your way Pidgeon Forge.

I have to agree with you, Catsndogs, on that area. It is beautiful and serene. If you love the beauty of a perfect creation, you will feel it pounding in your heart looking out at that wonderful scenery.

Let's hope that it does remain unspoiled by over-development. Maybe we should keep this secret.

We retired to Ashland, Oregon by way of California but are originally from New York (moi) and London (DH). Our last child is still at home and in 10th grade. We are all happy here.

But.

This joint is expensive. We still carry a mortgage, which is okay for now. We just got our annual property tax bill of $4,200. That seems high to me. The homes here are pleasant but if you don't have at least six hundred grand to spend, you won't find anything really nice. That means we aren't likely to downsize. There isn't much available that doesn't require work which isn't on our list of future plans.

I've been casting my net to see what turns up. A very good friend lives in TN and heralds its praises constantly. Realtor.com shows me that there are lovely homes to be had and we could ditch our mortgage.

Which brings me to my question of where in the Knoxville area has things like a place to play tennis, a movie theater or two, and a quiet but not moribund community?

Oh, and I find southern accents to be charming. :-)

We looked at moving to the Ashland area a year ago. I can tell you that if you really like Ashland you won't really like TN. The atmosphere is completely different, Ashland being a left wing kind of hippie party anything goes socialist area vs a more, oh I don't know... shall we say conservative religous area?

I'm not knocking Ashland, if that's what floats their boat that's fine... I'm just pointing out that Oregon values and TN southern values couldn't be farther apart imo.

^^ That makes me nervous. It's possible I don't have a realistic idea of what "southern values" entail, but I'm used to living in a pretty liberal area. Are there any areas in Knoxville that are, I dunno, more liberal than others? LOL, that's probably a weird question.

Well, people will come on here and say yes, there are pockets of liberal people in this neighborhood or that. They might tell you that Tennessee is more moderate than conservative.

But the point is that has a lot to do with perspective. And yes, some might consider this area moderate. I might just be one of those people. Then again, I'm very moderate.

But if you are very liberal this place just might seem like the gates of hell!

Just kidding, a little bit.

You might want to do more research on the area. There are large differences in many parts of the country. Find one that makes you happy.

Plain and simple, no. I come from the north where they're not to liberal and not too conservative. But, here, it's very conservative. Church is the center of everything. I mean everything. If not church, God and Jesus, I guess. I haven't been bible-thumped but it's very apparent that religion is everything here. I haven't seen any hassling of people that don't conform, if you know what I mean, and if I did, I probably wouldn't have many nice things to say about this area but I don't think they are nec "appreciated". (My own opinion)

Whoops!

That's what I get for posting at work, and not re-reading the thread.

Well, in that case, Knoxville is a prefectly lovely place. I am sure that you will be very happy!

Look, when all else fails, say "Go Vols!" A lot.

LOL. That's how I'm going to start every conversation to get in good with the locals. "How 'bout them Vols, eh?"

I noticed UT Athletics seems to be a big deal down there. I hope my car, with it's big Michigan block-M sticker won't get egged too many times.
