I would be interested in knowing how folks who have moved to Knoxville from up north have adjusted to the area.
Have you felt welcome? Are there cultural issues that come into play? Is it very a conservative area? Are most folks in Knoxville originally from the area? Thanks |

I'm a transplanted yankee that lived in Knoxville. I found Knoxville and its residents to be very welcoming and friendly. I met more people from Ohio then from Tn. I also found Knoxville to be cultural and to me Knoxville isn't like a typical city but more like a big overgrown town.
Before I moved south, I had heard all those unfounded stories regarding attitudes of the southerners towards the northerners. But I've never been treated unkindly or found to be the recipient of an attitude. I also never moved here with the attitude that the north was better in any way. The south is different then the north and I'm sure there are very conservative places in the south just as there are in the north. Recently the sunday paper(Knoxville Sentinel) did a story on Knoxville being ranked as the number 1 mid size city to relocate to. They called it the "Relocation Riviera" I loved living in Knoxville and would move back there in a heartbeat from Dandridge. |

Well, I have a few comments.
I find it bizarre that you met more people from Ohio than Knoxville. I guess it was the area you lived in? Maybe you were actually in Florida? ![]() The majority of people that are here were born and raised here. Read the wedding announcements and obits and you see that most people never move away. I think that is nice. It is true that if you come with the right attitude, like you did, people will be welcoming. ![]() Someone today told me today, "They don't do that in Wisconsin." That guys going to have a tough time here. I've recently met five different northern transplants that hate it here. Once said he even hates the southern accent! I suspect those type of people weren't any happier up north.Yes, most people are conservative, but you see very little of it in your face. Most people are nice, expect others to be nice, too, work hard everyday and love their families. I always tell people I'm not a southerner, but I'm working on it. ![]() |

Niknapster,
Stop pullin my leg- one can't get to Florida via Knoxville! No really, I did meet lots of people that lived in Knoxville from Ohio and we lived in East town. Living out here in Dandridge, I've met more people born and raised in Knoxville- go figure... LOL I find it hard to believe that anyone could hate it here, it is a great place to live. It sure is sad that they are close minded to a wonderful area that is filled with good hardworking, sincere and unpretentious people. That being said let them go back up north then. Pam |

I was born and raised here and most of the people I've been meeting look at me like I'm something of an oddity. (Well, now, yes, that could be for other reasons, but I'm talking about when I tell them I grew up here.) All of my neighbors are from somewhere else... hmm, Florida, now that I think about it... and my brother's new neighbors found Knoxville on the Internet and grew starry-eyed at the housing prices and this person I might be doing some work for read in some magazine that Knoxville was one of "America's Most Liveable Cities" and loaded up the wagon and followed the traffic on down. So I wonder, is this a coincidence... or a trend... that I haven't met another local in weeks? Not that I necessarily care, mind you, because I think a lot of spices do sweeten the pot. And I, myself, did move away "for a spell," but my mama says she always knew I would wander back home, when the time was right. ![]() Last edited by goodbyehollywood; 08-08-2007 at 12:54 AM.. |
