My family will be there in a month and a half (eeks!) We are excited, but I am wondering what types of programs I can involve my kids (ages 9, 6, and 3) to ease the transition for them... is there a monthly knoxville publication/magazine that lists all the activities going on for kids? If anyone knows of the best swimming spots (non-pool), please let me know. I don't need to fill every day up, I am just looking for things for them to do once we get there so they can feel involved in the community. I think we are too late to apply for summer camps, which is fine - that may be too much at first. Thanks!

Family events are usually listed in Metropulse's calendar, the free weekly.
The older one might like some of the Kids U day camps at University of Tennessee.
Kids U 2010 Summer Camps (http://www.outreach.utk.edu/ppd/kidsu/ - broken link)
They're half day and run a week. Lots of neat subjects. I'm tempted to take some of them but I can't pass for 12.
The University of Tennessee Gardens offer kids programs: Garden Sprouts and Garden Bugs.

For the little ones, UT Gardens and the Knox County Library team up for Books and Blooms every Thursday morning during the summer. It's free. Kids get a garden-related story, craft and, weather permitting, a run through the sprinklers. Bring your own picnic lunch.
For more info, email Emily Smith at: esmith27@utk.edu
Kids Cove at Knoxville Zoo is great fun.

The library always has something going on.

There are swimming spots around. The one I'm familiar with is at Melton Hill Dam, a TVA run recreation area. There is a roped off swimming area.
Many of the new city and county parks have splash pads instead of pools. Safer, cheaper and the kids have a ball. And they're free.

My kids are older, so IDK specifics on what to tell you; but a great source would be www.knoxmoms.com. They have links to just about anything kid related that goes on in town. It will also allow you to chat with moms that have kids the ages of your own, if you wish. I found it the best resource for finding everything from things to do to a pediatrician recommendation when we first moved here. It's a very helpful and friendly group of women.

Knoxmoms is great!

They have links to all the summer camps, even the ones that just run a few days. And, for the most part, you aren't too late for those that don't last all summer.

Today, I signed our 11 year old son up for his two weeks of overnight summer Christian camp. He's so excited!! He gets stir-crazy at the day camp after a while, even though it's very busy, so he gets one week in June to 'go away' and one week in July.

There are some great camps around here for kids, and a magazine full of them from Knox Moms comes out in late March or early April each year in the Knox News Sentinel (newspaper).

Also, don't forget to check out the local community recreation centers. Here's Maryville's:

And here's the Knoxville one:

Welcome to east TN.

Knoxgarden, I know you replied days ago and I am just now thinking to ask - I think I have read in past posts not to eat fish from Melton Hill Dam and others say they won't swim there - have you heard the same, or am I thinking of a different body of water?

How old are your children? deletedAnd I ditto the Knoxmoms thing. It's a great resource. I feel ya...I'm moving from Knoxville to Philadelphia and my head is swimming with the "unknown"...please let me know if you need anything. I've taught childrens' dance, sports and creative movement for many years...plus I have 3 boys of my own. Good luck to you.
