I ended up finding El Comedor. It was awesome. Much better then anything I find in Albuquerque. I guess the difference in Albuquerque is they think anybody will come just because it is New Mexican. Here I can tell that they try to attract more of the locals who will not settle for crap. I was going to go to Nellies but I realized they are only open for lunch and eventhough I grew up in SE NM, I am no longer accustomed to the heat here.

For Italian there aren't many options. Lorenzo's (the closest one is across the street from the University) is ok. Savino's (1120 Commerce Dr) is new in town; I've only been once but wasn't too impressed. The best I've had was at Si (El Paseo & Idaho, behind the Albertsons), but that was probably because of the dessert.
Edited to add - of course you've probably already left town by now! |

I had a nice Thai dinner at "Lemongrass" and at the "Pacific Rim" not far from the University

Gone goodbye! They closed their doors last week: Las Cruces Sun-News - Gardunos ends venture in Las Cruces I never thought much of their food as well, though certainly better than anything I had while living in NJ. If this place existed in New Jersey, there would have been 2 hour waits. In New Mexico, though, it was mediocre. |

We just have different tastes in the southern part of the state. More influence from actual mexican food (northern mexican ranch food to be precise). Bob's Burger's, which is huge in Alb, failed here in short order too. |

Technically, not Las Cruces...but the La Posta Restaurant in "Old" Mesilla, just south of LC. It's been around for years...and years. Great ambiance also.

La Posta = great atmosphere, location, etc. but mediochre tourist oriented food. There are many better restaurants in Las Cruces. They may lack the ambience, but you cant eat ambience.

I wish La Posta's food was half as good as its reputation and publicity. I live a few blocks away so I go there from time to time, and visiting friends seem to always want to go there. I'm regularly disappointed, but occasionally surprised by something good. It's a landmark, but El Comedor and Andale have better food in Mesilla

I guess we used to be neighbors tecpatl. Lived in Mesilla for a long time. The only things worth getting at La Posta, and you always have to go when company comes to town, is the steak La Posta. The chile con queso app is also pretty good and of course there's nothing wrong with those margaritas! Plus the atmosphere is really nice.
For standard mexican food though there's at least 25 places in town I'd rather go. |
