Want to Relocate to Las Cruces
wow, am so glad to have found this thread. i am trying to relocate back to the states after many years abroad and found these entries to be so encouraging. las cruces sounds very similar in many ways to where i am currently in the med.
i would be grateful for any advice you locals have as to how much one would need as a cushion for paying rent and generally surviving until employment could be found. i havent a clue anymore the cost of living there. and i am a bit afraid to ask but here goes: how likely is it that i WILL find sustainable employment?

A couple thousand a month should do it, say $2.5-$3 to be safe, less if you aren't as much of a spender.
Being self-employed I'm not really sure of the employment picture, but I know the hospitals are frequently in need of reliable people. Of course a lot depends on what skills you have.

thanks, funky monkey. i had a feeling it would be around that much. as you say, there are a lot of variables. if i should find online newspapers to check the help wanteds and rentals, are there some for areas close to las cruces that publish? i mean, do many who live in LC actually commute to other towns/areas for work?
also, are there 'more affordable' residential areas that are also safe? i would prefer to pay a bit more rent to be in a safer area. any suburbs or areas that are best would be great to know. OR if its easier, let me simply know areas that one should keep out of! lol
thanks again for your time

Yes many people commute to White Sands Missile Range or Alamogordo, some to Deming, and many people work in El Paso.
You might check areas around Telshor, Las Colinas, North Alameda are all pretty safe and not too expensive.
