Mine has a yard and a rock wall. Privacy isn't all that...yet. I've got trellis' going in and a tree. It should be ok. I've seen some people build the wall up to privacy levels mine are only about 4 feet though. I haven't had a problem my one neghbor is a friend now, and the other never goes outside it seems.

Default Condo, Townhouse and House

I have a feeling it will be difficult for me to choose between a townhouse and a single family home. Glad I don't have to make a decision immediately.

I had the same dilema myself, but what settled it was the fact that I live alone and I'm not getting any younger. Since I plan to travel frequently I was worried about the security of my house if I had left it abandoned for a few weeks in a row. I still can play tennis two times per week but I don't know for how long I will be able to clean my yard and remember to lock all the doors. I always lived in a house and loved to be able to get up at 2 in the morning and play the piano without disturbing anybody. As I grew older I realized that one has to gradually give up all that independence. A condo seem to be the right choice for me at this time in my life, even though I still long for that time when I was young and able to take care of a house with a very large yard.

I love the community living concept of condos and townhouses but am concerned about lack of privacy and noise.

You're right "pinusconus" about the lack of privacy and noise, but in my case I did not want to be all alone and having the company of other people, makes me feel more secure. About the noise, it depends on the quality of the construction of your condo, mine has good soundprofing. I know I will sacrify privacy but I'll gain being in a country club atmosphere, with a large pool, a fully equipped gym and a large social area, all available to me in the same place where I live. If I were younger I would have chosen a single family home.

Hey, Tito, I'm just now reading this after I got back from NM......I'm glad you found a place. Las Cruces is a wonderful city....I had considered it for a number of years. But it gets just as hot in Las Cruces as it does here in WT.

I did find out that Farmington can get hot in the summer, even up to 110, but the worst heat doesn't hit until July.....and it cools off in October. I can handle 3-4 months of heat, but not 7-8 as I do now.

Enjoy your new homey-house!!!

I can't wait until I can move myself.

There isn't any place on earth that is perfect, everything is a trade off. I got sick and tired of the cold and dark winters in Illinois. The condo complex where I'm going to live has a large swimming pool and I plan to use it every hot day. I'm trading off hot summers for really delightful sunny winters and as a bonus, I won't have to drive on slippery roads anymore.

Very much so, and lots of compromsing, but that's how it goes.

Coming from IL (I have been in northern Midwestern winters...), you will LOVE the winters down here. Snow and ice, while they do happen occasionally, are not common at all that far south.

Wait until the green chile starts coming off in August-September!!!

You can't beat either New Mexico or West Texas for food!!!

I hope I can get in Las Cruces a dish I ate once in Puebla, Mexico. It's called "Chiles en Nogada". It's like a "Chile Relleno" but not filled with chese, but with ground meat and different bits of dry fruits and some fresh pomgranate seeds too. Absolutely delicious. I can't wait to try the different chile dishes in Las Cruces.

Yes, I've had versions of it......very tasty, usually made with poblano chiles.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could find it somewhere, but I've never had it in the states myself.
