Perhaps what I can't find in Las Cruces (food) might be available in Ciudad Juarez. Incidentally, does anybody go to the other side to buy cheaper medicines?

Tito ~

There are places now in the states where you can get generic medications for $4.00. I am not sure you could buy cheaper than that in Mexico, and you cannot be absolutely be guraranteed the meds in Mexico are okay. I would just never trust a med I purchased in Mexico.

I plan to go the $4.00-generic route when I get to NM and our nice insurance is gone.

Yes, I have heard that meds bought in Mexico could not be genuine, one of my sons-in-law who is a Texan of Mexican descend, has advised me to stay clear of the border because it's a DANGEROUS place, particularly around Ciudad Juarez, that has acquired notoriaty recently for the illegal drug trade, police corruption and serial killers. I guess that a saving of a few dollars isn't worth the risk. Thank you Towanda for the tip on generic drugs.

Tito,

Palomas is a much better route to go when traveling to Mexico for meds, liquor and other things. It's about 1/2 hour further away but is a real relaxed and easy place to cross.

Personally, I've grown up going to Juruaz and Mexico in general. My father's family were germans and he grew up in Mexico City. It's like anywhere else you've got to have your wits about you. I love it down there and could never see curtailing my trips.

I know there are groups from the cared facilities that make regular trips down there for meds and if you use a reputable pharmacy there is no difference in the quality of the drugs.

I suppose it's what you're comforatable with. My prescription benefit plan from work makes them cheap for me here so there is no reason for me to get them there, I generally go to buy cheap liquor and of all things cheese. There is a large menonite community in the state of Chihuahua and they make some of the best cheese around.

Thank TKO for the information, My health plan covers for most medicines with only a few exceptions. I'll remember Las Palomas in case I have to go there some day. One of my best friend in Mexico City is also the son of a German father and a Mexican mother, he was born in Chiapas where his father used to owe a coffee plantation.

I thought that El Paso was the only way to go to the other side, I'm glad to know about the other alternative. I certainly feel fortunate to be close to another country and be able to visit once in a while. I'm aware that Mexican culture extends beyond hot spiced food and "Corona". I'm excited and willing to experiment other facets of the rich pre and post colonial Mexican culture.
