dracul,

Thanks for the encouraging words and the entertaining comments :-) I bet you'd like the movie "Jeremiah Johnson." If you haven't seen it I suggest it highly. Came out in 1972.

Speaking of under the radar. How about off the grid completely?
I'm not sure its even possible anymore. But if I could find someone who could/would teach me to live in the mountains, even at my age I'd seriously consider taking that walk.

Jared

I have a friend who lives totally off the grid near Radium Springs, 14 miles north of Cruces. He's got an adobe house and while he uses propane to heat, he's got a 30K solar system that provides all the electricity. It's neat and doable, but just like hybrid cars it's not cheap.

TKO,

Always great to hear! I mean there are people who have lived without money, electricity, etc. for a million years in this area. I suppose it comes down to how "ruff" one wants to live it, heh?

Actually, the guys got a big screen tv and the works. I think he has to turn on his generator's ocassionaly, but he's got most of the creature comforts that I'm used to. I know maintenance is an issue but one that can be overcome. All in all it would be a great thing to do. Particularly because the electric company here is the pits. Some of the highest rates in the country...I think they're still paying off their investment in the Palo Verde nuclear plant in Phoenix.

Hye : Jared

I am also thinking of doing the same thing as you !! Moving down to Las Cruces for at lest the winter months.

I am from Washington state, I ended up down here in New Mexico near Las Vages just a little ways out of Santa Fe. But the room mate that I was to share a house with did not work out. So Now I am sitting here with a very loaded pick-up truck with all my things and it snowed Thanksgiving day a few inches, a bit cold too !! I am used to cold but getting sick of it after 18 years in WA. state, Time to try something new !! I am homeless right now, on the road too, who know where I will end up!! But need a place soon as it will be winter and colder.

So where to live, first time ever in New Mexico, don't know a soul in New Mexico. So I have been looking into Las Cruces, I don't know exactly why, maybe because it's south of here and probably a bite warmer. Any one know how hot it gets in the summer months ?? I looked on Google Earth, sailed around a bite above the city, lots of nice farms around, city seams a little bite big for a small town country guy like me, but maybe it's a place to start for something new. So all the INFO people have been posting for you Jared, is doing me good also.

Looking for a place to stay and hopefully in a nice no crime, no gang area. I need an economical place to live, ( that's warm) to rent, a bungalow, cabin, duplex apt. or a very small house trailer, preferably not in the noise part of town, nor in the central part of the city. Any suggestion would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks !!

I am a single man, youthful minded age of 63, an artist and an import jewelry vendor and I am also looking to meet nice mellow friendly hip single slender women.

So good luck to both of us, Jared !!!....lol..lol

Later you all
~ Oro

Oro,

Great to read your post. Well I say, come on down. More the merrier :-)

All my life I have heard New Mexico associated with three things; artists, spirituality and awesome natural beauty. Seems like a great mix to me. Never been there myself but I would describe Las Cruces as high desert. Farther north there are more mountains, trees and water. Maybe someone else can give a statewide synopsis of the natural terrain of New Mexico.

So what's the weather like in Las Cruces? Well here is where the Internet shines. Check it out for yourself (for the last 30 years if you like :-)

Here's a few link I have collected. I have spoken with a number of these people and
I have to say without exception, they have all been great people!

Las Cruces may have the best city web site I've yet run across.Full of helpful info.

Here's a great list of Gov and support agencies, from the Human Service Dept of Labor, its a pdf so you can print it out. I'm packing this one with me :-)

The nice mellow friendly hip single slender women I haven't run across an agency or link for. But I'm sure nature will take care of that one :-)

Good luck!

Thumbs up Great INFO !!!!!

Thanks Jared

Great INFO. I will look back at all this when I get there.

Probable have to find some place to print this out when I get to Las Cruces, maybe the " Mesilla Valley Community of Hope " if they have some Internet access there for the public. Or the Sunny Valley Drive RV Park in town, if they will let me stay there with out an RV...lol only have a pick-up canopie to sleep in.

You said ..> I am having a spot of trouble determining how people shop for rentals there. Its not craig's list. The local paper doesn't seem to have online ads for rentals. Is there a local pennysaver type rag that people use. Just how is it someone would go about finding a rental in Las Cruces? Can it be done on the lower end of the market remotely? Or do I need to be there and look for signs posted?

The rentals on the Las Cruces web sites are to fancy and high priced for my blood.

If you come up with any INFO. penny savers papers or what ever, pass the good word on to me and /or post it.

Do you think the " Mesilla Valley Community of Hope" would have leads or where abouts of low price small funky but OK rentals ?

Hopping ?

Oro,

I have directly contacted the local papers. They all require that anyone advertising rentals pay extra for it to show up on the internet. (Poor, backwards marketing, I'm afraid). I am confident that the local, cheaper rentals will show up on the hard-copy newspapers and such. I am also certain the local charitable organizations will all supply information on economical local housing. This is what I am counting on :-) To bad that craigslist is not more widely used, but the problem is that those of lower income with lower rental rates are not going to be using the internet to attract renters. I'm thinking that a $150-200 roommate situation could be very realistic. I have seen awesome rates on craigslist in Columbus, NM (which is right on the border). And Columbus is a very small town! Problem there for me is employment opportunity's. If I had a truck to live in I wouldn't hesitate to explore Columbus :-)

As far as computer access is concerned I am certain the library will have public access. That's what I am counting on :-)

I have a really good feeling about Las Cruces. I am not in the least hesitant to "arrive" there. I am certain it will all work out with a minimum of discomfort :-)

Jared
