Very poor area is all I know except that it does have some very nice people. There are many dairy farms down into that area and they smell really bad. I personally would live in that area, but to each their own.

Anthony is unimpressive from I-10, but there are some nice agricultural properties in the valley, as well as a country club area along the river. The area is overwhelmingly Hispanic, as high as 90%, so there is some rural poverty. Anthony is classified as a colonia, one of many in Dona Ana County. It lacks infrastructure and there are lots of illegal subdivisions without good public road access, water and sewerage systems. Do your research before buying to be sure you can get the services you need.
The dairies are along th interstate and the smell doesn't carry to far from there. |

My neighbor told me that they have a lot of illegals in the area. She is Hispanic and told me to tell you that if you are white that you might be comfortable. Whether that is true or not, I could not tell you. She is my best friend here and I will miss her desperately when we move but we will keep in touch because she is going to help me with our move into the Rv and such. Plus, she has already us that we can come and visit her and park our RV in her drive and stay there for a few days. That is good because we love to sit and talk with each other. We solve the world's problems you know.

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies to my question about Anthony.I did wonder why such a beautiful home was so cheap! And I have heard that it is a high crime area.I became disabled due to health in April 2005 at the age of just a bit over 40.I just want to to find a nice quiet, serene place to live with my dog and horse but still be close to shopping, movie theaters and so forth.I really want to be in Las Cruces but am having no luck finding a decent place that a horse is allowed.I have heard that the price of real estate has gone up there.I am only looking to spend about $100.000 cash which I will have after my house sells. Can I actually find something in that price range? I am willing to buy land and build or take a fixer upper.Where oh where should I be looking?I am sick of cold weather!Any ideas? |

First off, you are not going to be able to buy anywhere that I know of in this country for $100,000 or less and actually build, especially a 3 bedroom home. If you could I would be very surprised. But, about the Dona Ana county area, there is no way, shape or form that it can be done, unless you plan on building a 1 bedroom shack of some kind. The only hope you have of staying within the price range you mentioned is to buy a small mobile home and putting it on a piece of property, and that would be iffy because of having to put in your own septic, a possible well and of course the electric. Out where we live, on the East Mesa area of Las Cruces, we bought a 1.15 acre piece of property out of the ETZ zone, meaning one can horses and whatever, and had a septic put in and electric. The water out here happens to be from Moongate Water Company, so there was and is no need for any sort of well. We had our single wide mobile home put on a concrete foundation with a plenty of storage underneath, almost like a basement, except that it has no concrete floor under there. This was done back in late 1998. Property out here will cost on average of about $20,000-$27,000 per acre and some might have utilities and some will not. Most will not and it is rare to find something in the price range I mentioned with utilities. Anyway, it cost us close to $56,000 to get everything done back in late 1998. The prices these days are higher of course. Our acreage is fenced by barbed wire and the people living next door to us have a few horses on their property. You have to be willing to buy out like we did to have horses and stay away from the ETZ zone. There is also no cable out here. To have television one must have either DishTV or DirectTV. We opted for DishTV and have been very happy with their service. Anywhere you live in this county where you would be allowed to have horses will also mean no cable and no high speed internet service, except for the wireless internet service offered at a higher price. Our place is right on the corner of Holman and the private road that we own part of. Holman road is a black top road and the county does take good care of it. The private road has to be taken care of by the people who live on it. Just the other day we all went and ponied up some money and had a neighbor grade the road because of the damage that had been done from the monsoons that we got hit with this past summer. Suffice it to say that if you really plan on spending just $100,000 then you need to look at the mobile homes out of the ETZ zone that are on the market. They will already have the necessities for living that is necessary for you.

I do live in PA at this time in the snow belt.We get all the lake effect nasty weather that comes from Lake Erie.It is beautiful here but since I have become disabled I am stuck in the house when we get alot of snow.I currently own a beautiful home with hardwood floors, tile counter tops and such.I also have over an acre of land.I paid only $54.000 for my place about 10 years ago.Of course I have done some work over the years like a new roof and a few cosmetic upgrades like new storm doors, shutters, landscaping and so forth.I do think if I look hard enough I can find a place.I have a few good leads on property in Alamagordo that already have utilities and septic installed for under $30.000.I did live in a mobile home years ago and really don't care to do it again.Does anyone know anything about modular homes?I have heard they are pretty much like a regular house.I checked some dealers and I can get a very nice one for about $80.000.I suppose they charge a fortune to deliver and set up though!I have found a few older homes, one with 5 acres for $115.000.May have to go that route.Las Cruces area is getting more expensive I have been told.I may have to break into my piggy bank to relocate!

I think you will like the Alamogordo area much more then those areas futher south. It is a much nicer area. Try searching on up into Tularosa and maybe on further north into Carrizozo.
Try to avoid mobile homes if at al possible. |

Thanks for the advice.I am wondering though about these sand storms Alomogardo gets? Is it just in certain areas? If so which areas do I avoid? Also does anyone know how much domestic help is in that area? We pay $10.00 an hour here.

Concerning the domestic help...It all depends on if you use illegal or legal help as to what the prices would be. GQ |
