I am new to this, so I am not sure I am doing this right! My huband and I are considering moving to Las Cruces (we currently live in Minneapolis) to be closer to my parents who have moved there a year ago. I am wondering if anyone knows about job availability in teaching. I am licensed to teach K-5. I would also like to explore teaching at the college level.

Las Cruces is a growing town, and it seems there is always an elementary school under construction somewhere in town. So I would imagine there are jobs. I don't know how well teaching jobs pay in NM or LC, but I am sure there are websites out there that could help you. If not LCPS then there is GISD at the southern end of the county (near El Paso) which is also growing.
For college level teaching there is NMSU and Dona Ana Community College. |

To supplement the above post, a new elementary school was just completed and is now in operation. A lot of the schools in the city, however have been placed on state watch or a type of probationary status. As is the case almost anywhere, teacher are always in demand, but I fear that the pay is far below the national average here in NM. Conversly, I hear our current governor is fighting for teacher initiatives such as higher salaries and rasies. As for college level, New Mexico State University is a decent institution. I think that like 70% (or thereabout) of the faculty have a PHd, so they prize high education. Dona Ana Branch Community College also has two or three facilites in the area (including a brand new campus) and are probably constantly looking for teachers. Hope this helps.
