I liked Las Cruces enough to the point that I decided to buy a condo, where I'll be retiring in November of this year. For the last few years I have been searching for my retirement home, I have considered a number of places such as: Costa Rica, Mexico, Chicago, Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico and other places. Of course, every person has his personal preferences and there is also, the limiting money factor. My preferences were: a medium size city, with mild winters, with an artsy atmosphere, with dry climate, wth adequate medical facilities, with a reasonable culltural invironment, with a variety of towns within reasonable driving distance and not far from a major airport. I thought that Las Cruces met that bill.

To be honest, I don't want to have only retirees as my neighbors, who will be talking about the same things. I want to be able to interact with all kinds of people. Write me to my regular e-mail address and I'll tell you more about my personal experience in Las Cruces.

I'm amazed at the prices of housing and yet in my old neighborhood home in Northeast El Paso our house back when i was in high school (3 br/2ba) is appraised at $76,000 in the Andress high school area.

Default Alameda area of Las Cruces

My husband and I lived for a short while in Las Cruces in 1997-98. We rented in the Telshor area at first while looking for a house to buy. I noticed right away that I hardly ever saw anyone outside in that neighborhood because there was only desert landscaping, so no one was out working in their yard. Everyone had an automatic garage door opener--so any car appearing would just glide into the garage, the door would close, with still no sign of any people! Although we lived there for a couple of months I never saw or met anyone in the neighborhood although I took plenty of walks.

We ended up buying a little adobe house for only $72,000 that had been built in the 1930s down in the Alameda area--an unheard of price in today's market... We chose the Alameda because we loved the older houses there and because of all the beautiful trees and gardens. We met all of our neighbors right away and really enjoyed knowing them. Everyone was so friendly. Walking around the neighborhood was a joy, because people were always willing to talk about their gardens. We liked being close enough to the downtown to walk to the library. We got season tickets to the NMSU basketball games, which was another part of LC life that we really enjoyed.

On the other hand, we heard a fair bit of nightlife from a nearby bar and there was occasional evidence of taggers. But I would still be there if family issues hadn't made it necessary for us to return to the east coast... We'll be back though.

Default Las Cruces neighborhoods

I'm enjoying reading the information shared by residents and former residents of LC. I will be relocating to Las Cruces and am eager to learn as much as possible about the various neighborhoods. Does anyone else have anything to share?

I was in LC for 3 weeks last summer and loved it. The people were so nice, the areas were nice and clean. I liked how it seemed everything as far as businesses were in the middle, then one side was like the boonies(where I stayed with my Uncle on the edge of the desert) and then the other side was older and had a different feel to it. The cops seemed to be on top of everything and the weather was great, although it rained a lot. The skyline was amazing. The biggest drawback was the bugs. I guess we don't have any here in Cali. My uncle didnt have anything to get rid of the bugs and didnt want to try my "ziplock back filled with water and tinfoil" trick. It worked while I was in AZ lol.

I love the sky and mountain vistas in NM and can't wait to see the views in LC. You got my attention at the mention of the water and tinfoil trick. Would you be willing to share?
