Question only for Las Cruces/Alamogordo/Deming and similar southern NM towns. The question is also only for people whose AC is actually running at least part of the day in most day in the month(s) you refer to.

I'm looking for a ballpark guestimate average cost per square footage for an average home.

I live in a 1700 sq ft house. We have refrigerated air. We have now lived in this house which is a contemporary SW style home in the Picacho Hills area for one year. We are two retired people in our house so we spend more time at home than a working person.
Our average electric bill for one year is right at $97.00 per month. We used the AC about every day from May through September. I hope this helps.

Thanks. Is the bill a lot higher than $97 in the months you used the AC?

I'm renting a room by the week and its the hottest room in the house. Owner is penny concious and I want to turn on the AC when its in the mid 80s and above like it was yesterday and today and will be for several more days. I was thinking of offering him an extra $10 or $15 week for AC use which sounds like it will more than cover his costs. The ac cools half the house (2500 sq foot house) in addition to my room, so I have to compensate for that too.

I'd still be using electricity, which is what the gripe is. But so far its working out OK and I won't be in this room much longer.

My townhouse is 1000 sf and I have a modern refrigerated air system. I haven't had a bill over $160. My electric bill in the winter, when I'm heating with gas, is about $60 so roughly a $100 per month for cooling in the summer. Mind you that's only for 3 months in the middle of summer. That's dirt cheap IMO. My place is not all that well built or well insulated and I keep it mid-70's (I'm usually home all day with it on as I'm retired).
