I spend time in El Paso regularly, and have never encountered anything like that there. Granted, most of that time has been on the West side, which feels like a different world from the rest of the city. That being said, I haven't encountered, as a Caucasian person, any acrimony in that city due to my race.

We had this one Hispanic woman that waited on us at the store there in El Paso (who was, you guessed it, Hispanic) say "look around, you're really outsiders here, aren't you?"

I think she was a little bit mental, anyway. No, like I say, the time for racism is just about over. The Man upstairs will see to it.

There are always crappy jobs available in retail, grocery, restaurants, hotels...but the pay will be abysmal so you better not need MUCH extra income. Even University jobs are very low paying compared to similar jobs in most other places. But you definitely don't need Spanish for most jobs, although if you are dealing with low income people a lot then you might because that's the most likely customer base where you might find Spanish-only speakers.

I've lived all over the western US, and believe it or not, it seems that the closer you are to the border, the more established Latinos seem to be, and therefore more likely to speak English. I could go into a few paragraphs as to why, and present anecdotal evidence to back it up... but I'll just let it be, as it's pretty much so. You'll see when you get there.

I have lived here for close to 15 years, and I tend to agree with this statement.

Strange, because most everyone in Mexico is Caucasian or close to it.

To be fair, many in the UK, while they may have taken German or French in school, don't speak it much. Anyone who has anything to say in this world does so in English. Just as they would have in Latin 2000 years ago.

Explorer17 who started this thread probably witnessed an old NM lic plate: "New Mexico USA?"

That said I agree English is no problem and I like you have lived all over including all 4-Corner states. I've lived in El Paso and I did feel 'a little' like a minority there. In fact a Latino cabby once said to me: "Do you think that little dirt-patch separating the 2 countries means anything to us?" I didn't answer NO...LOL. The thing about El Paso IMO is that they live in the 'shadow' of the rest of Texas...In fact they don't really feel a 'part' of Texas. The feeling IMO is mutual. El Paso could easily have been a part of NM if you know the history of the Gadsden Purchase (or "imminent domain"..HaHa). AND lets not forget that NM sells much of their water to West Texas as part of the Gadsden agreement and/or state boundaries.

My father ordered something to his place in Silver City once. They said they didn't ship to Mexico... he said "New Mexico"... she replied "New Mexico, old Mexico, doesn't matter. We don't ship to Mexico".
