If it were me, I'd take a drive up to Cloudcroft because then you get a view of going through the mountain pass, you'd see some of what's called a desert, you'd get to drive through Alamogordo, and through High Rolls and get a view of the beautiful pine and aspen forests and it wouldn't be but a couple of hours drive.

If you didn't want to drive out of town, then I'd just drive over to the Mesilla Valley because it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth. That's just the area west of Las Cruces and you can see some orchards, alfalfa fields, get a view of the mesas on one side, and the Organ mountains on the other.

I agree with Malamute. No need to stray too far afield. If you are considering a move to the Las Cruces area, you would be best served by checking it out as much detail as you can in one day. Good luck.
