There is actually a Jewish section in the Masonic Cemetery with a fascinating history, as Jewish (and other European immigrants) were the driving force in building up Las Cruces in the early 1900s.
There is one temple, Temple Beth-El, which recently relocated up to Sonoma Springs Ave, away from the Alameda section of town. To my knowledge, this is the only temple in New Mexico south of Albuquerque. There are at least 100 full time attendees.
During the holiday season, it is quite often that Kosher foods will be 'wiped out' at the Albertson's on Lohman Ave. At least this has been my experience.
I don't remember the name of the museum about NM pioneers but it has a fascinating section about Jewish pioneers.
I would guess you are thinking of the Farm and Ranch Museum. I do not remember if the Jewish pioneer display is one of the permanent displays or not, but suspect it is not. If that is the case, it is possible the display is no longer there, but yes it was very interesting.
I visited LC many times in the past 25 years. I think for hte most part the people are friendly. It's a sprawling area that was long overlooked by national restaurants and companies, but in the last few years that changed. I like the food for the most part. There is some awesome Mexican fare. You do want to subscribe to the New Mexico magazine. One of the nicest things about his area is you are not far from
"something different". Riadoso is an artsy, horsey town in the mountians. So is the Inn of the Mountain Gods - they have a casino. On the other hand you are not that far from Old Mexico where you can buy a quart of 100% pure Vanilla at the liquor store for $3. You can only buy imitation vanilla in the grocery. Medicine is 50-75% cheaper cross the border. You can get glasses and dentures for next to nothing too. The thing that surprised me most about the little town where I took my mother was the pharmacies and resturants were very clean and the food was terrific. No Monteauma's revenge there. It was the Marguerita's that got me. And for a $10 bill one of the local cousins would watch the car for hours and wash the windows, too.. I kid you not about hours. We went down one day for medicine and left after midnight. the same guy was still with our car 12 hours later. He saod his cousin watched while he took breaks. Rentals are hard to find and they are pricey.
You're lucky.. My closest Temple is 50 miles.
