aNAISANAIS is on a distinguished road
Default Is juarez crime spilling out to LC?

Hello, i've been to LC and found it to be a nice mid-sized city, with friendly people, and a very laid back style, which I like. It doesn't have big shopping centers, and no Opera house, but El Paso is a skip and a jump from LC, and I could go do arts, and shopping, or play at Sunland Park casino, when I want to. There is only one thing that worries me. Crime.

Is some of the crime going on in Ciudad Juarez, and Palomas, spilling over to LC?

Thank you.

you might be surprised but Las Cruces has a very low crime rate and El Paso every year is one of the safest cities in the country. I would move to Las Cruces if I could.

The crime is kept in Mexico.

Virtually all of the high publicity crime in and around Juarez is drug related, (an exception is the violence against Mexican women, but that's a separate issue) due to a couple feuding cartels duking it out over territory and using highly trained (often in the USA Special Forces programs, at taxpayer expense) former Mexican Army specialists. This is basically a Mexican/Mexican drug war.
I don't think this type of crime is something that spills over to EP or LC very much, though there certainly IS some "homegrown" violence with drug associations.
I don't worry about it, my wife doesn't worry about it. When I go to Juarez I don't worry about it, though I'm as cautious as I would be in any city of a million plus.
Don't fret.

There are hit list with New Mexican names on the list so yes it does spread into NM. With billions of dollars of drug product coming into the US there is always a chance of innocent life being taken.
Should you live your life in fear over it all? Thats something you need to answer on your own.

With all due respect, yb, how is it that you believe you have knowledge of who is on a drug cartel's hit list? Just askin'
I'd certainly NEVER suggest that there isn't some level of danger...just like there is hazard in simply crossing a busy street....but for the average, uninvolved person this danger is right up there with shark attacks. A LOT more people, by the way, are killed by bees than sharks.
Everyone, of course, has to make their own decisions and judgements about danger. But a I think if you asked most TV-watching Americans they'd think sharks are a lot more dangerous than bees n wasps.

Wasn't it in the paper? (Not the names, the fact there is a list)

It's been in just about every fricken paper for the past couple of weeks!

Here is just a small sample for those with blinders on. Many more articles like it if you care to look.

Police: Mexican cartel hit list targets Americans
By ALICIA A. CALDWELL – Jun 19, 2008

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — More than dozen people living in New Mexico and Texas are named in what appears to be a hit list from a Mexican drug cartel, law enforcement officials said.

At least one police officer from southern New Mexico is among the 15 to 20 people named in the threat, said Arturo Baeza, a sheriff's captain in that state's Luna County.

The list, thought to be a threat from one of Mexico's powerful and warring drug cartels, was provided June 12 to local authorities by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, Baeza said.

Drug cartels are waging a bloody fight for control in Ciudad Juarez, a sprawling city across the Rio Grande from El Paso, and Palomas, a village across the border from Columbus, N.M. More than a dozen police officers were among more than 400 people killed in Ciudad Juarez this year.
