There is also a small airport in LC--you can take smaller planes to Albuq and a few other places (think Mesa Airlines is there); El Paso is an Int'l airport.

As for the mall thing, I just wanted to clarify for her that it wont be what she is use to. Perhaps it is major for a small city, but I didnt want the original poster to get her hopes up of wonderful shopping.
On the shopping note--Old Mesilla has some cute stores, most with a southwestern flair.

I grew up in El Paso. I like Las Cruces better than Alamogordo. I was trying to remember if there was a book-burning, or something like that in Alamogordo. I don't remember what it was, but there is an element there who are sort of like the Salem witch hunters. However, I have to say, right outside of town is the best pistachio ranch on earth. The Heart of the Desert pistachios are grown at Eagle Ranch, and they are so good.

Of course, outside of Las Cruces is the biggest pecan orchard in the U.S., south of Mesilla. Mesilla is a nice art community at the edge of Las Cruces.

Between both cities are the Organ Mountains (awesome) and White Sands. To the east of Alamogordo are the towns of Cloudcroft and Ruidoso, neat places to go.

I found it. A church group in Alamogordo burned Harry Potter books in Dec. 2001. However, there were many others protesting the book burning. So, I'm probably being unfair in my assessment.

I still like Las Cruces better.
