We tend to disagree about the "little infrastructure". There are many businesses, water systems, paved roads, septic systems that are very good, Cable TV/internet etc, electricity, natural gas.

Why are you asking for our opinions ....as we gave them then you are attacking what we think and then state your own opinion about Chaparral so why ask about Chaparral in the first place.

No one on here has posted more ''Positive Postings/Threads'' about Southern New Mexico than me since i've been a City Data member since 2006 ....so for someone to ask me the question ''have you visited and spend any time in these towns to KNOW what they are about'' as to insinuate that i'm putting down MY BELOVED SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO has me curious about what this poster is leading in to.

I should know these areas as i've lived in Southern New Mexico starting in Mesilla Park since 1970 as a kid and i've seen darn near every Place, Town, State Park, Campground, Ghost towns, Dirt Backroads, Hiking Trails etc. all across Southern New Mexico over these last 38 years.

I know who Dolores Wright was as she was the State Represenative for Chaparral and did great things for the Colonia like getting Chaparral 4 new schools over the last 10 to 15 years and also a reciently new park named after her in town there. I was the one to come on here about a year ago to brag about the new $30 million dollar High School that opened in Chaparral which is great for the town.

No one's putting those towns down because they are ''quasi colonias'' as there's nothing wrong with living in the country or small town as i currently do myself and i have lived in mobile homes/trailers at times in my life and i would live in any of those places if needed but most folks aren't willing to live in those places so if someone ask about them i'm gonna tell them what i know good and bad.

Domino .....is 100% correct about the infrustructure problems i.e. non Paved Roads and non Water Systems and Septic Tanks etc.. in some of those areas as that's why they are called ''Colonia's'' and yes i have posted on here about Gov Richardson spending $20 million dollars over the last 2 legislative sessions to pave the roads and to tie them in to Water and Sewer systems as he knows about their plight. I know about the Otero County Sheriff patrolling there and what crimes are reported in Chaparral as i read the police logs on the Alamogordo Newspaper daily although i've never mentioned anything about any crimes there in my postings.

So again no one here is putting you or those locales down as if you like them then great to have another person post positive about Southern NM as again i have always pulled for Southern New Mexico. Heck i'm always defending El Paso or Alamogordo and Southern New Mexico on these forums since 2006 from the ''Hate Posters'' who have come on here and crap on my Home Area.

Oh gosh, I'm not putting anyone down by any means! Just trying to see what others know about outlying areas, is all.

We have done a tad bit research and know more about Chaparral. But I'm new here and I had now idea how much you've been here, 6/3. So, I'm sorry about what I've said if it sounded negative. Just educating myself is all!

O.k. then i'll apologise as i misread as i'm glad that you have those towns interest at heart as again i pull for them to do well. Sadly they get most of their services from either Dona Ana or Otero Couinties which is meager so Gov Richardson has really looked out for them and i think his colonia monies will start to make a positive difference for them over these next several years .

Again i say check them out yourself AmberLynn as you may find the place that speaks to your heart .

Thank you.

And in all actuality, I have been positive. There is SO much to offer in the outlying areas.

We hear a lot of how wonderful LC is (and yes, I do know it has +'s and -'s just like everywhere else)......and how un-appealing (for lack of a better word) the quasi-colonias are. And yes, people DO squinch their noses when hearing of certain towns like Chaparral. It must have a past that we don't know about.

I suppose it's all dependent on "quality of life" that one desires.

I don't know why alot folks turn their noses up to the small towns whether it's Chaparral, Tularosa, Rincoln, Hagerman, Lake Arthur, Kingston etc...i think most want a town or city with shopping, medical, city entertainment etc..or think that mobile homes are not up to par with todays society as they are labled as ''Podunk'' by many. Even some of my relatives back in South Carolina think that the Charleston area is so superior to us in NM as i just ignore them when they put down the Southwest Desert here.

One thing about those small towns is that some are far enough from the cities is that you can see the stars by the billions at night as there is no lite pollution. Also when i lived up in isolated La Luz Canyon your closest neighbor is a mile or two away so folks really look out for each other as they do in the smaller places.

One negative that may be a concern is for those who may need medical as if you had a heart attack and are miles from a hospital it could be a concern for some like retirees getting up in age.

I only wish we had more water recreation like lakes or reserviors but the mountains are really nice especially by Chaparral as you have the view of the Franklins mts to the west and the Hueco's mts to the east.

If you really find to like it there in Chaparral, Berino, Mesquite or Vado etc..then why not go for it AmberLynn

For myself, it would be land, small or no neighborhood, scenery. It would depend on what I had to swap and what it would be swapped for.

I would guess swaps would be between more or less equivalent houses. Is it a permanent swap or just temporary?

I wouldn't have a problem living in any of those areas but even then I wouldn't want to live right in the middle of those towns but on the edge, on the outskirts.

Some people like a structured neighborhood with street lights and sidewalks and wouldn't be happy in a small town or where streets are dark. There are plenty of very nice houses between EP and LC. It's not all "colonias" by a long shot, and not all what is called a colonia is what people picture as colonias. Some of what is called colonias aren't any different than rural areas or outskirts of towns elsewhere.

When I lived in Chaparral NM two or three roads off the main stretch were paved. I was on the volunteer fire dept. Stires Market was a tiny little place. I drove out to Chaparral recently and was amazed. They laid gas lines down most of the streets so you can be on city gas or do what we did back then and use propane. There are more houses built out there, compared to when we were there most people were in mobile homes.. we had a nice double wide, before that I was in a tiny, and I mean tiny trailer... but it was just me then and I did not need much room. And they are on El Paso water system as I understand it now.. so most of the septic systems have been updated to city water and sewage. Now there is a whole new section or two out there.. its huge now.. when I lived out there it was very secluded and quiet. I would guess that there was no more than 900 people out there back then and thats over estimating. Now its a huge complex of streets and homes. Looks more like a colonial and depressed than the little desert community it was back then. Many of the people I knew have moved further into the desert, or to new little communities like Chaparral used to be. Wont be long and they will incorperate Chaparral and then as the person said above the cost will rise and that wont go over well at all.

The truth is.....they all have their own water supplies. Called "community wells". There are no supplies from El Paso.

Just curious, Muhnay....why do you consider it "a colonial and depressed"?

Again, it depends on the quality of life one seeks. We hear the residents do NOT want incorporation...which is why it was voted down the last (and only) time they voted. The "buzz" was.."We moved here for the very reasons they want to change. A non-incorporated town, little to no crime, serenity, peaceful and many unpaved roads".
