We bought a home in Las Cruces!
We finally did it!!! I flew out this past week to pick out our new home in Las Cruces. We chose a home in Rincon Mesa from Hakes Brothers Construction and it will be finished being built by the end of March 09. They have gorgeous homes at a unbelievable price! We looked at many, many homes and builders and found Hakes to be the one for us. Family owned...a lot of the upgrades are included in the price (such as ceramic tile floors and the six foot high rock wall around the back and sides of the house that we requested!)
We are so excited...we found our dream home!

I got this from our builder information:
Hakes Brothers homes at Rincon Mesa in Las Cruces features breathtaking views of the Organ mountains. With just a short drive to Onate High School, Sonoma Ranch Elementary, the Telshor Theater, and new shopping centers, Rincon Mesa is a prime location for any homeowner.
From HWY 70: North on Mesa Grande, pass Central Ave, left on Chesney Road, across from Onate.

That "breathtaking views of the Organ Mountains" describes just about anywhere in Las Cruces. They are kinda hard to miss.

Well, that's great for you...where are you moving from? The "unbelievable price" is part of the problem of the disparity between local residents and the Californians (or whoever) moving in. What is an unbelievable price for you is impossible for most locals because the market here pays so little. I moved from the Pacific NW and it certainly is cheaper to live here, but I'm also making almost 50% less here with a similar job to the one I left behind. I'm comfortable, but I will not be able to purchase a home or land on my salary. I'm not complaining, because I'm content - just sharing information, and you'll probably hear more about it once you're here.
There is also a high number of existing homes for sale here - many beautiful homes - and the prices keep dropping. But the developers just keep on building.
Will you be employed here?

Wow!!! Let's just say...$484,000 is a little bit out of my league to say the least!!!
I'll keep my $139,000 new home! (We sold our present home for a little under twice that much.) That's how we can afford to move; we fully realize that we will make half (or even less) of what we are presently making. The fact that I am 60 and my husband is 62 and that we don't have that long until we can retire (if we choose to) makes our needs much less than that of a young family. (Not to mention, thankfully we've built up a few resources that we can also fall back on if need be.)
Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

Have Fun While It Lasts!
Enjoy your house, your car, your cozy SW life, because guess what? The American Southwest has no future. A lot of people are moving to the desert and trying to turn it into a Midwestern suburb, with golf courses, mini-malls, and fleets of automobiles.
You'd think that after $4 gas over the summer that we'd learn a lesson. Guess not. Here's a news flash: YOU CAN'T TURN THE DESERT INTO THE SUBURBS.
Fnord is almost saying that he/she is thinking: Las Cruces is sprawl. I should've stayed at home.
