I was only there for a couple of days, but liked how the air felt. That sounds weird, I know, but it felt very different, at least from the northeast. It was over 80 degrees, and the sun was hot, but the air was thinner, not as "close" as here.
I know exactly what you mean. When I first visited the SW and then went back to NJ, the air felt absolutely oppressive to me. I'm sure it is a combination of the elevation here and the low humidity. At 10pm last night, humidity was at 2%!
Until I visited here, I had no idea that was even possible
Wisteria........Also kinda nice is the bosque along the Rio Grande there in las cruces and the state parks along the Rio Grande some 20 minutes north as there are trails, picnic areas, swimming and fishing etc..

tecpatl .....I'm going to spill a food secret here: On weekdays the Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism Management program at NMSU serves lunch at 100 West Cafe in the west end of G. Thomas Hall.
wisteria ~~~~~ Let's make sure to visit when we go on our fact (house)-finding tour.

The lunches and international dinners wax and wane with the school year, so they might be done until Fall. Be sure to contact NMSU and find out before going. They post menus and schedules on their website. It's worth the wait.
I love getting into my car when it's SUPER HOT and just sitting there for a few minutes. I know....weird.
Evidently, there are now at least three of us (myself included) who plead guilty to this seemingly insane pleasure. The difference is I usually don't resort to the AC at all, just drive around and enjoy roasting myself.
