As for retiring here, from what I've seen and heard, it's not a bad choice at all. But I'm no expert there. I don't really know any retirees here.

You should probably move away, if for no other reason than to get some perspective.

"super" hot? Have you ever been to the Phoenix area?
How about Houston? Dallas? Atlanta?

That bit gave you credibility. I've never been there, but
I can just tell ...
(I just got back from the Frontier this morning and I'm still buzzin'.)

That's what kills me about you Phoenicians, 106-107 is merely heating up, in ABQ that is hotter than hell! Oh well, it's all relative I guess, and I'll be soaking it up there on Friday and Saturday en route to San Diego.

Agree...We you need to move away and explore.
I never hated Cruces but I had to move away top find a decent paying job. If I could make in Cruces what I made in L.A. or currently make in Phoenix I would move back in a heart beat.

You need to ultra mega get outta town for a few years...put some miles on, live in some other places and you'll probably have a better idea why people think LC is a pretty good spot. Most of your criticisms are, in my humble view, rather petty, almost inconsequential in the big picture.
Go out there into the world and GET a big picture.....your's is pretty small at present.
Good luck and Enjoy

They may be petty to you and some others but not so to others. I found what he wrote to be pretty much on the mark. I have family that lives in the general area of LC and they agree pretty much with what he said also. The area does have an undertone of "racism" toward people who are not Hispanic and only Hispanics of Mexican descent, mind you. I know this because I am of Mexican descent and I do not approve of the way that many of the people in that area treat others who are not Hispanic. When it comes to culture, not much at all, unless it is Mexican, it doesn't seem to exist in that area. I found ABQ to be much more open to people of all kinds that LC could ever be.

Growing up a red-haired, blue-eyed, freckled white boy in Las Cruces in the '60s and '70s, I wouldn't say I felt any racism against me. I was different, and there was some natural curiosity, and the dominant culture is hispanic, but I didn't expect any accomodations to be made for me. I imagine it's no different from how minorities feel in areas of WASP dominance. I wouldn't call it racism.

Moved here last July from MI. The weather here is fantastic compared to there. No real humidity. I didn't consider the summer especially hot -- it was wetter than MI summers (Monsoon season apparently). I love seeing the sun 12 mo's out of the year rather than just during the summers. There's no snow during the winter here. I find the climate near perfect.
The Organs may not be "real mountains" but they're more real than any mountain in MI (just ski hills there). I'm a white guy but haven't noticed any racism -- can't say the same for ethnic areas in the larger cities in MI.
The lack of green here has been a blessing. No stupid lawns to mow and water. Naturally green areas come with a lot more rain/cloud cover/humidity/biting insects/etc. It's not paradise here but you can do a lot worse in other areas of the country. Suffer through a few midwest winters that last 6 mo's (Nov-Apr) and you'll find out how nice it is here.
