I've never been to Las Cruces but I see many posts bemoaning the supposedly high crime rate. It appears the insurance companies totally disagree with that. This was from today's New Mexico Business Weekly (on-line version), Las Cruces was named #1 safest city for it's size.

Las Cruces tops among mid-size cities for safety - New Mexico Business Weekly:

Default Moving to Las Cruces

My husband and I have been going to NM for the past ten years and we recently decided to retire in LC and bought a homesite there after exploring most areas of the state. We will start building in a year and move 4 or five years after that with frequent trips throughout.

We have always felt perfectly safe in LC and have met only very nice people of all cultural backgrounds and from all over the US. We also are happy that it is a university town. I currently teach and perform music at a college so it is important to live in a town with some musical events, opportunities, and a symphony. I have heard that it is tough to get symphony tickets because they are so popular.

We have been there in March when there were some higher winds and you couldn't see the Organ Mountains for a day or two but it was not that bad and the temperatures were still nice. We have also been there in June and August and didn't consider the heat bad at all because it seems to cool off at night and it is dry. We are used to high temps and humidity which we will be thrilled to get away from. We are going to LC in mid November for a long weekend and then again in March for a week. Each time we go we try to explore various areas. We have been to Cloudcroft, White Sands, Ruidoso, Gila Wilderness, Hillsboro, Kingston, Silver City. We always go to Old Mesilla at least one day per trip-Andeles is a great restaurant as someone else mentioned. We have noticed the growth in LC and Mesilla because every time we go there, there are new shops and restaurants now as well as other retail.

On this trip, we want to explore the town of Dona Ana and some of the Camino Real Markers in the area. The history, culture, natural resources and the mountains of course are so wonderful. We have made several very good friends already.
