Wondering if there are any bars around LC that you'd classify as "divey" (eg: dark and dirty, same barstools for 30 years, butt-rock and country-western on the jukebox, no phu-phu fancy named cocktails...) Or is it all trendy, theme bars geared for the younger crowd/college students?
What about in the smaller towns like Deming and Silver City? Any bars at all? I've read that drunk driving is a serious issue in NM - are there less bars and taverns because of this? |

Is that an actual bar, or does your brother have a problem with the juice?

My favorite was the club, but that closed down.
I'd say most the other bars in town would be dive bars. |

Welcome Inn is gone, as are the others mentioned above.
I like Palacio in Mesilla...a down-to-earth neighborhood saloon (my view of cantina is more a Mexican one) with everyone from pecan farmers to bikers to artists to old Mesilla characters hitting the free popcorn and downing adult refreshments. Women should be comfortable here also. Sometimes on Friday nights a couple of the older local musicians will play corridos and ranchera music, which I love. Some folks get intimidated here...but there's no reason to fear. Muy Amable! A smile goes a long way. El Patio is ok as well and the Border Jazz Quintet is worth seeing. |

Actually, I think the bar at Chope's in La Mesa is also dive-able. I just don't spend enough time there to know whether it's a good place to hang and drink and talk. I'm usually having one waiting for the restaurant to open.
