Remember, New Mexico is a very large state and not very populated so any news of a tornado in New Mexico is big news.
Yes, New Mexico does have tornadoes, probably about 3 or 4 a year. Someone could correct me if I am wrong. But these tornadoes are in the eastern plains of New Mexico close to Texas and Oklahoma where they do get a lot of tornadoes. Las Cruses and the surrounding area is to mountainous to have tornadoes and if a tornadoes does form, it is very unlikley to touch the ground.
Flooding, New Mexico, especially southern New Mexico is experiencing the wettest years in almost 50 to 100 years. I do not know the weather is like where you are from, but New Mexico does have flash flooding. New Mexico gets the majority of its annual rain fall (approx 5-7 in/year) during the monsoon season which lasts about 2 weeks. So you will have storms that will drop about a half of inch of rain about 20 minutes. That is a lot of water and at times will cause flooding. But like tfox said, rarely does it cause propery damage.
