Question Public housing in Las Cruces/Doņa Ana County?

I am planning to relocate from Pennsylvania to Las Cruces/Doņa Ana County in 2012. I am currently living in subsidized public housing (Public Housing Authority) as my only source of income is Social Security Retirement. It would be financially difficult for me to live in private housing on my Social Security income. I have searched for and found very meager information for subsidized public housing (Public Housing Authorities) in Las Cruces city and Doņa Ana County. Any assistance in locating resources for subsidized public housing would be appreciated. Thanks!

There is currently a major shortage of available subsidized public housing in the Las Cruces area. I don't foresee much change in the next several years either.

Thanks for the info! I may need to look elsewhere for housing, but I am trying to avoid the ABQ area, if at all possible. I need to relocate to a relatively dry climate for health reasons and I am not wanting to consider Arizona as it is just not my cup of tea. I'd like to stay in NM, if at all possible, so I may need to make some compromises as I can not afford to live in private housing.

Have you considered El Paso, TX? There are quite a few public housing complexes there, including at least one "elderly living" complex. I would be surprised if the waiting lists aren't "years long" but really haven't a clue.

Yes, I have checked out living in EP, I'll pass! As a Caucasian male, I'll be in the vast minority. I speak fluent Spanish, but I would like to speak some English at some point in the balance of my life!

FYI, I lived 35 years of my life in El Paso and speak only a few words of Spanish! If that's your best excuse for not considering it, then it's not a very valid one.

Completely agree. You need to know as much Spanish to live in El Paso as you would in Dover New Jersey, which is to say, beneficial, but not really necessary.

Moreover, when it comes to ethnicity, I am pretty sure that Las Cruces is about 60% Hispanic. Not quite the 83% of El Paso, but you will be in an ethnic minority, as a non-Hispanic male.

Chill out! I was being facetious (that's "funny"!) re my comments re the ethnic composition of El Paso. As an ex-truck driver, I have been in EP on numerous occasions and I have always enjoyed my stay in the city. That was back in the 70's and 80's when Cuidad de Juarez was a "livable" city and I enjoyed many days (and nights) within its confines. As we all know today, entering CJ, is not for the faint of heart. And please know that CJ being across the Zona Frontera from EP has not, in any way, influenced my decision not to relocate to EP. Being fluent in the Spanish language, I look forward to the opportunity to read, write and speak Spanish on a daily basis, it is what I have worked for the past 6 years.

Luzernecntygent - did you find what you were looking for yet? I emailed you some time ago, but maybe you prefer only to be contacted in the forum. I have information about Silver City if you're still interested.

Please let me know if you have, indeed, found public housing and where you settled in... Thx, justplumducky

Luzernecntygent, just curious about public housing myself, and wondering how it's working out for you, if you have, indeed, relocated by now and where you chose to do so...
