I am going to be moving to the Vegas area for my new job. We has 3 children and are looking for the best area(s) to raise a family. I have family that live in the Overton area but I'm not sure if I want such a long commute. Being from Southern Idaho, we are looking for an area with low crime, great schools, with a nice friendly family atmosphere. Thanks.

Las Vegas does not have low crime. It is a big city with two million people and you have the usual problems that come with a big city. However, there are safer places to live. I would stay on the far west side in Summerlin up to the Centennial Hills area.

It will be a huge culture shock coming from Idaho. I came from a big city and it took me a while to get used to it. You aren't going to get an Idaho feel here at all.

20 miles, but it fits your criteria perfectly.

Depending on your budget, I have been told that the "Rancho Circle" area is in the best school district. (West of 599 and south of 95).
The circle itself is mostly estates with gated entrances, but there are many nice areas nearby in the same school district.
Check out Zillow to see what homes have sold for, the zip is 89106.
(This is for if you want to be near the strip.)

comparing apples....to bulldozers, IMO. Have you ever visited LV? If not...you may want to before moving...just to be sure it's not what you don't want.

In general no. The schools are not good. People who live on Rancho Circle rarely send their children to public schools. The Catholic Our Lady of Las Vegas is pretty good.

Boulder City is fine but expensive and a long commute. Any of the standard high end suburbs have good schools. 89012, 89134, 89052,89138,89144 and numerous others. 89129 and 89149 and the SW have very nice large parcel neighborhoods that are OK.

...and Zillow.com should be trusted no further than one can throw a stick.

This may not be the place for you. You must have never visited. It is not a place to raise children I will tell you that. This is an adult entertainment town. Your children will probably be in shock in Las Vegas.

If you still insist on coming I would suggest Summerlin but the schools are over Vegas are horrible. And the crime here is horrible also.
