You take a $20 [or whatever] dollar bill to the mechanical change girl. It spits out a ticket. [NOT sure but you may be able to stuff it in the machine] You stick the ticket in and play. When you're done playing, you cash out and it spits out a little white ticket. Back to the nechanical change girl and she/it spits ouot money.

You will still see the guy in the jumpsuits emptying the hoppers but they are full of tickets now....

That being said....I dont work IN the casino so this is kinda what I have observed....but if Im wrong Mojavedx will jump in and correct me.....cause he watches EVERYthing .

You’re almost right. You place your currency into the bill validation slot on the slot/poker machine and it credits your machine the currency amount. When you’re are done wagering at the machine. The machine will print out a ticket that you can place in another machine or cash it out at one the Casino self-redemption KIOK's.
At night when the casino collects the slot drop. Those slot bill validation boxes you see being placed out on the seats by soft count are cold boxes " no money in them" If I had a nickel for every idiot who takes one and sneaks it off to the bathroom only to find out its empty.
