I was at South Point on Saturday night. Every blackjack table was full with a couple minor exceptions. You couldn't elbow your way in to a craps table.

The title of the thread was meant in jest. Of course we are in The Big Recession with no end in sight; it is just that with the backdrop of a wicked recession & reports of declining casino revenue, I found it an odd coincidence that this casino on this night was packed.

Just a random occurrence; like the oft-quoted hypothetical that given an infinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of typewriters for an infinite amount of time, at least one of them will by random chance accidentally type the complete works of William Shakespere.

Gambling is a way of helping these people escape reality and the thought of winning (albeit fleeting) gives them something to hope for, it's how human beings cope.

I've read that beer/alcohol sales go up when the economy is bad too. Probably true.

The casino is a nice break for me. I take my $5 and dream of all the money I will win. Reality is that I lose my $5 and go home. That's entertainment!

Ok, I didn't get it was meant in jest. Unfortunately, there are idiots (not you) that will say (and actually believe) that there is no recession since the strip is packed wall to wall with people. What I see is the whole USA is turning into a third world country with no middle class. In other words, the South point was packed but pretty much everyone who was playing was wealthy or rich. There are still plenty of rich people left so that is why Vegas will still survive. Society as a whole here is doing quite bad. I have already seen 2 people this morning, one of them being a woman, digging through the dumpsters in the apartment complex I just moved in to.

I frequent the South Point and they're usually busy, but most are playing B J very conservatively. Nothing wrong with that. Most are out to enjoy some time away from their routine, have a drink or two and, hopefully, make a little 'change'. I like the South Point. We don't gamble big, but always seem to get a comped meal in the café (love their Asian food) or buffet. The dealers, most of them, are very friendly and fun to be around.

Conversely, is it possible that you percieve the recession to be much worse, by extension of the images you see and the sources of your information?

You seem to thrive on negative feedback and make deductions based on isolated incidents. (But I do realize that it is responsible when someone sees a dead canary in a coal mine, its not wrong to acknowledge it.)

Vegas is hurting, no one makes any qualms about that. It can be easy to dismiss the real depth of the economy when you see packed nightclubs, restaurants and sports books (which made a killing yesterday!)

I still go back to the fact that just because there is a recession does not mean people know any better how to budget their money than before. And of course what you see daily will influence your perception but when factual data backs up those observations as well, it is difficult to deny. Just wait until wealthy gated communities have electrified fences and the poor roam the streets like zombies. Well, more zombies than you already see out there.

The start of football season has certainly brought more business to the sportsbooks. In visiting my clients downtown today, they got nearly cleaned out of the snacks that I provide versus last week when it was about 2/3. Should be about the same on the strip which I'll find out tomorrow.
