A year? what in the world are they still doing here? It's not really that bad unless you are unwilling to look for a job outside of the scope of your experience or education.

The sun had a good article on how people cast dispursions on the less fortunate. What is the saying you have to walk in someone elses shoes to really know what they go through in life. It's amazing how people are so quick to judge granted there are people that are lazy, but you can't tell me the 8 million unemployed in the US are lazy or the 198,000 unemployed in Nevada are Lazy in give me a break.
Newly homeless couple met with hostility, not help

With my freelance writing opportunities all but dried up and unable to afford the rental of my cousin’s home in North Las Vegas, Lela and I now find ourselves at a sort of way station, the Budget Suites of America along the urban trench near Rancho Drive and Smoke Ranch Road. It is a sprawl of economically depressed off-Strip casinos, fast-food joints, gas stations, choking bus fumes, the rush and scramble of humanity, the insolence of the street beggars, humble yet aggressive (“Hey, cuz, gimme a cigarette … c’mon, I know you got one, man.”).

This guy said his primary source of income is his monthly Social Security disability payment of $926. That is a lot of money!
If he tries to live within his means, he should be able to make it.

Get a small studio for about $400 a month then he should have at least $526 remaining. Electricity bill in summer should be no more than $100 for a small studio (even less in winter). Therefore, he should have at least $426 left. $425 divided by 30 days is $35.5. I believe it is enough for this guy and his GF.

He said he cannot work as he is on disability. Ok, that's fine. How about his GF? She can always try to find a minimum wage part time job.

So stop yelling. He has to live within his means.

There are plenty of jobs in Vegas. People are just lazy and picky.

My work involves me with homeless people, 8am-5pm; those who are crammed with others (relatively homeless) to those who literally are in a garbage bin or on a cardboard and sleeping in a private parking area or a bench in the daytime (absolutely homeless). I call them my clients because of my job. Many of theese clients are actually trying to look for a job and there are many who have given up. The clients come in different flavors and it is easy to feel confortbale about them unless you REALLY knew them personally and that's where conscientious limits kick in (of course, it is a ingrained part of why we exist--> our anxiety). They have common denominators of why they've become homeless, ,uch of which has to do not with "mistakes" per se but the mistake of not preparing for the future. There are many reasons for becoming homeless and remaining homeless.

I don't care if someone judges any homeless person as lazy or not; I'm beyond that and it is because of the constant practice of my profession. Nevertheless, I do judge them anyway, because it IS part of my professional job plus I can put myself in their shoes (having been a direct product of an economically poor immigrant father and mother decades ago). I have to clarify, confront, interpret issues they have, then do it all over again. It is quite easy to stand by the sidelines and make judgment calls too; these are inherent to us humans. The forward moving question is; what are you going to do about it, when you are there dealing with a homeless person?
Many will have different responses, and I respect that.

It is, hugely, a dog eat dog world/survival of the fittest at this point in time. I hope no one is naive to that reality. In my lifetime, that's not gonna change..I don't care, there are matters that are more pressing (family, for example).

Sry to hijack the thread momentarily as well.

It's funny that people who have jobs try to insist that there are jobs in Vegas. I lived in Vegas for about a year without employment. To make a long story short, I placed thousands of resumes out, and NOTHING. I decided to pack up the family and moved to California. After 2 weeks, I was offered 4 jobs.

I am not putting Vegas down but people should not move to Vegas unless they have a job waiting for them!!!

....and my last roommate moved here from Ohio and got TWO job offers in the next day just by going out to the mall and asking if anyone was hiring. This was 2 months ago. Were you willing to work for minimum wage? I would put my money on it that you wouldn't so that is why you could not get a job here.

uh...let me ask you this. Did your roommate have a particular skill? Is he versed in a particular field of expertise? Does he have a degree in this field? How many years experience in this field does he have as well, what kind of economic growth did he accrue in the time he has been a professional in that field.
People like to think that it is just that easy to go out and stake your claim in this economy AND in Las Vegas. Im sure, that if one did not care how it got done that it could happen.
But, now let me inform you of this. And when I say this, I am saying that this is solely based upon my field of work which is Culinary.
I am an educated person with a degree in culinary arts. I am a certified Pro Chef 3 C.D.C. I have, at the highest point in my career managed PNL exceeding 5 million + for some of the biggest resorts here in Vegas with my last being the Chef de Cuisine of the opening of the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego.
Do you know how many interviews that I have been to as of late where I was told ...."you are over qualified"? All of them. In this day and age where pride is something that must be swallowed, what is one to do when they hear those words.
To test my theory that this town is completely off its rocker, I went to a job fair holding interviews for cooks. Yes, I went completely down the chain in a high speed reverse. One look from the interviewer and was simply asked...Why? Why would I take something like this with the skills I have. My reply , Now days, you have to do what you have to do.
Although I was moved on to a more formal interview with the Ex. Chef, it was there I was met with this remark. "I dont take chef's into the kitchen...Im the chef and more times than not, when i have hired managing chef's they try to take control of my kitchen....sorry"
So...how do you like them apples. That is the kind of crap I have faced for months now. So dont go telling me that Im picky or freakin lazy or I was not willing to do whatever it took.
These times are hard on alot of people. Sure, there are lazy people, but dont even go off and stereotype those that are unemployed.
Im sorry, but its comments like that that really get my undies in a bunch. You have NO idea what its like to walk in shoes like mine. Go preach your hypocritical values somewhere else!

My roommate was 23 years old with no particular skills. He got a job selling sunglasses. It pays minimum wage plus commission. I just find that some people are not willing to take ANY job no matter what it is. That is not everyone as there are people who will take any job and still cannot find work.
