14% unemployment doesn't mean no jobs, but it means many people are going to have a hard time finding employment who would have found jobs when the rate was 5%.
If you are the best qualified person available for a hard to fill job category, you won't have a problem finding a job.

Default Attracting companies to diversify the economy

Quote:
If you want businesses to move here, it has to be a place people want to live.
If that were true all of our manufacturing jobs would not have left the States and gone to Mexico, India, China and Pakistan.

Companies for the most part could care less about the workers wanting to live in an area....what they want is low taxes, cheap labor and low regulations!

Which is why Vegas is the industry hotspot of the world!...... Oh wait.

I mean of the US..... Wait.

Of the western US.... Hmmm.

What does California do again? High taxes, good schools, better "culture"...... AND?!?!

Default California

California gets away with it because of the already entrenched companies that headquarter there and the huge coastline which is necessary for shipping. Plus not every company is unhappy there...what we're talking about though is companies looking to relocate...and what they primarily seek as reasons to pick one place over another.
Las Vegas SHOULD look attractive to companies due to the weather, taxes, employee base and other pluses. What my point was though is that being a place their workers would want to live probably isn't very high up on their priority list.

Then, what is on their list? We have everything they want.

I think you're mistaken in the fact that "most companies don't care about what is best for their employees". I'll be the first one to jump on the "evil corporation" band wagon.... I always am. But, there are also a lot of corporations that are built with the knowledge that happy employees make better business.

And, even if they really don't care about their employees well being. They aren't going to move somewhere where they can't get well educated employees for their management positions. Las Vegas has the highest drop out rate of any city in the nation.

Honestly, I'm not a CEO, and I don't own my own business, so I really am just guessing. However, I'm from Denver Colorado, and I can tell you, business' go there by the droves. IBM, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Lucent (when they were a business ), Sun Microsystems, Seagate hard drives, United Airlines has their home offices in Denver....I could go on and on and on. Same with Washington (Seattle), and California, and most other "liberal, progressive, high tax, high regulation" states.

Colorado is about as far as you can be from the coast, and it attracts businesses that need to ship products all over the world.

In the logistics world, Vegas is just across the street from LA. "Shipping" is not the reason business don't move here. "Being rooted" isn't the reason either. If money was really the answer, then places like Texas, Wyoming, Nevada would all be flooded with corporations.... and we're not.

Explain to me why that is.

Actually you are quite mistaken. Washington has neither a personal income tax nor a corporate tax. In terms of "liberal, progressive, high tax, high regulation" states Washington ranks right there with Nevada.

You've just hit the proverbial nail on the head.

While quality of llife can be debated there is no disputing the fact that Las Vegas does not have the labor pool that CA does.

With the high unemployment it shouldn't be hard to find educated employees in Las Vegas. On top of that, many people will relocate from other states if they have a guaranteed good-paying job in Las Vegas. They can interview people over teleconference if they don't want to pay to fly them out for interviews.

Actually, you are right sir. I thought they had changed that in the last few years, but it appears they have not.

No corporate taxes.... http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/corp_inc.pdf

And truthfully, I pulled Seattle out of my ass, for an example to illustrate my point. There are a ton of cities I could point to to show how a school system, "culture", higher education, mass transit, low unemployment rates with higher wages... a good city to live in, period.... is better for business than no regulations, and/or lower taxes.

Finding "people" to work isn't difficult. Finding educated people to work for $8 is.
