Greetings. I'm an interloper from the Los Angeles forum as I am considering retiring to Henderson in a few years. My sister and her family live in Henderson and Las Vegas. In response to the rather popular "Stay Away" thread, I thought I would post this in support of the proposition that the Las Vegas area could have a spectacular future. Granted I'm an "outsider", but it seems to me that this would be the perfect time for your Mayor and other civic boosters to expand the employment base by diversifying the kinds of businesses that call Las Vegas home. Your neighbor to the West has just about the MOST unfriendliest business climate of any state in the Union and I have to believe that many companies could be tempted to relocate. Your city offers plentiful and low-cost housing, a willing workforce, available and low cost commercial space, world class entertainment, tons of outdoor recreation opportunities and is a SWA hub for business travellers. I hear endless commercials from the State of Michigan promoting their advantages, but I never hear any promotion of Las Vegas as a serious business city. All I ever hear about is gambling, hookers and 1$ shrimp cocktails. I know that there's a lot more to the city than that (as I'm sure you do) and it's a shame that you're not capitalizing on your advantages to help pull your city out of the current malais. Maybe instead of just waiting for the next hotel to open to solve your problems, someone ought to ask the civic leaders what they're doing to bring businesses to Las Vegas. A thriving and diversified business community plus the entertainment business would make Las Vegas unstoppable. Just my opinion, flame suit on.

Mike

Welcome Mike,

No flaming here unless you're a basher So we're a bash-free zone

Your post actually is spot on IMO. I think it would be beneficial for our new Governor to reach out to the businesses in California to let them know that the door is open if they feel they are being taxed or regulated to death.

Personally I don't see Reid extending the invitation as he probably doesn't want to upset Boxer, Feinstein or as I recently read "Gov. Moonbeam" but I digress Nevada offers a lot and it is a huge pro-business state. I guess time will tell.

Maybe the new Gov should reach out to Honda of America and try to get some of the plants that are getting ready to leave Ohio and some other Mid-West states...They get no tax contracts for 10 years and now the states want to start making $$$$ from them and they are threatening to pull-out and leave. They hold the cards as in no smaller plant that makes parts for Honda has the machines bolted to the floor, they are all sat in there ready to be pulled at a moments notice. I remember one day my friend said there was a union meeting and the plant manager meet them at the door with thier time cards letting them know that the minute a union is voted in, the employees will be escorted out, machines will be gone within the day and the plant will be no more.

They should start filming movies here...seriously. We could have the "Hangover Chronicles" in theaters up until 2020....or "The Revenge of Shrimp Cocktail: Slicing Mr. Ribeye" - it could be the next horror classic.

Im still campaigning for the "VEGASWOOD" sign to be built on the side of Sunrise Mountain...

I say go for it.

Good point Nolan, why stop at just California? Sandoval could reach out to Oregon as well, I'm seeing the same exact thing back in Maryland which is huge anti-business doing the same things California is doing and is just as broke. Many of my friends want to get out of Maryland.

If Sandoval gets one company here, one in Pahrump and one up in Reno then he will be golden the rest of his career here so it's up to him.

I really don't think an unfriendly business climate in some state is going to be the ticket for a company to relocate.

I grew up in a high-tax, "socialist" state Minnesota, home to any number of Fortune 500 companies. I've oftentimes wondered why they continue to stay there. 3M threatened to leave over 40 years ago for Sacramento, and they're still there, at least Headquarters.

I also read an article in Forbes about why more companies don't leave CA
and an unfriendly business climate is certainly not the only factor. If the CEO is happy there and he'd miss his favorite golf course, or his wife is not open to a relocation, stay they do.

If the employees suffer, so be it!

Definately some good points. I will state that I enjoy visiting the Golden State as it's weather is fantastic compared to the high heat we get in the summer months. Lack of professional sports teams could also be a factor.

My guess is that business owners in the aforementioned states will eventually make the hard decision to either relocate or close shop. Of course without letting this delve into politics what effect the Healthcare Act means for those companies that have over 25 employees when that bill comes into fruition.

I'd advertise LV business opportunities in the northern states as soon as the weather gets cold up there.
