Peccole Ranch is not part of Summerlin. Summerlin was built on property purchased by Howard Hughes years ago, while Peccole Ranch was built on property just south of a portion of Summerlin.

As Bob said. However Peccole Ranch is also west side and difficult to tell from older Summerlin. Boca Park, considered one of the premiere shopping and dining areas of Summerlin, is actually in Peccole Ranch.
Either Peccole Ranch or Desert Shores are just about interchangable with Summerlin and perhaps a little less expensive.

Peccole is one of the better areas because it has a lot of amenities like the tennis courts and trails...

The trails in Peccole Ranch are very nice. We like to refer to them as the Peccole National Forest. Very shady. We hesitated on a great buy there once and lost it. Now we're sorry. Same goes for Desert Shores. If you snooze you lose. I actually prefer Desert Shores, if I could have a house on the water, to either Summerlin or Peccole but would buy in any of the three.

Peccole Ranch is nice. I've walked those nice shady trails many times. It's one of the prettiest places.

When I view the crime rate stats for 89117 it looks a lot higher than Summerlin. It seems to have a lot of home invasions. Is the area not as safe as Summerlin?

89117 is actually a little less than 89144 which is in Summerlin. Both are more than 89134 which is the northern most piece of Summerlin. Most of it deals with the presence of large Blvds and heavy commercial areas. Half of 89134 is Sun City which is very low in crime. The whole area is 8 or 10 times better than the central city.
Check the individual neighborhoods on a smaller radius. You will find little difference.

I would like to live in the Peccole Ranch/Summerlin area but I have to work in the east @ a school on Ft. Sumter Dr. 89030. Is the commute really that bad?

yeh, that would be pretty difficult, it is 15 miles, and if you want to use freeways, you have to use Summerlin Parkway, US95, go through the spaghetti bowl, and use I-15...I-15 slows down around Lake Mead and Cheyenne, plus I think they are supposed to be starting construction on that portion soon...
