We are looking to move from NY into a gated community in Las Vegas and while we would visit the strip and are realistic about the increased crime levels in that part of town which are related to transient vistors on alcohol & drugs or in the less affluent and desirable suburbs, we are more concerned about 'what it is really like living in suburban Las Vegas and whether you feel safe at home at night or feel confident that no one will break into your house while you are out'.
We appreciate your honest feedback.
Crime here is no different than it is in any other city. Just because Las Vegas has the reputation of anything goes...it doesn't really; and crime is no worse than anyplace else. That reputation comes mainly from people who haven't lived in Las Vegas, and an enormous amount of it comes from the imaginations of people who have never even been here.

I'm just amazed at the things people from back east who have never been here say to me or ask me about Las Vegas. But then we have always let them believe those things because it creates the kind of curiosity that gets tourists to visit. Call it marketing.

Crime happens everywhere, but mainly to a very small percentage of people. If you look at all the chaos merchants there are in this world you will realize the enormous number of people who have a vested interest in keeping us all stirred up about how terrible things are. People who make their livings off of chaos, like cops, lawyers, psychiatrists, ambulance drivers, doctors, morticians, government employees, don't want to end chaos, they want to create more. Leading that pack would be people in the news business. When they report a crime they try purposefully to make you believe you aren't safe. They never remind you that millions of people went through the day without incident, but one guy gets robbed and he becomes "everyone".

If you feel safe where you are now you should also feel safe here. There are some areas that have higher crime because of the type of people who live in those areas. All you have to do is look around a neighborhood and you'll see which areas attract low life criminals by the condition of the neighborhood and the look of the people wandering the streets.

Most of Las Vegas is very upscale and looks nice so it won't be hard to separate the bad areas from the good. After all, most of Las Vegas is pretty new. And when we say Las Vegas we mean the entire metropolitan area of the Las Vegas Valley which also includes Henderson and North Las Vegas, as well as many areas such as the Strip that are actually in the county..

i'm not pointing you in the wrong direction, you have to understand that zip codes are large and what happens in one part of a zip code might not happen in the other part, but it still pushes up the crime numbers...
Cool. I was just busting your stones kinda though. As a males we like to protect our women, I could care less about crime if it was just me as I've been in some shady places. But thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it. So basically I should just stay on the strip and not really venture off to the suburbs.? I really will be just ripping around to interviews and handing out resumes all over the place. One of the first stops is at Carter Powersports which is at 6275 S. Decatur Blvd, thats pretty close to the Manor right? Is that an ok street?

If you stay away from the bad areas both are quite livable.

The Manor will be fine. Note though that it is not the distant suburbs. Normal urban precautions should be observed.

Thankyou as well olecapt! Are you guys taxicab drivers or something? How do you know so much in detail about every little place?

How is 89084? I'm really liking the Presido apartments on W. Rome Boulevard. Lvkelkid you have any experience with this place? Why do you think the deposit is only $200 when the rent is like $1160 for a 2 BR? Olecapt....? Thanks in advance!

The Kid points out and I agree that gating is mostly ineffective. If it makes you feel better though go for it. Better though to put emphasis on areas with low crime. Any of the green areas in the above maps work pretty well. These areas are generally similar to good suburbs on Long Island say.

Some of the yellow zip codes are also fine in the correct end.

There are some places where the gates actually work...though they generally have augmented security patrols and such. Spanish Trails, Some of the subdivisions in Lake Las Vegas and some in Painted Desert.

Note though that these are expensive.

Finally note that our ex Mayor Ms. Jan Jones lives in one of the really tight places in Summerlin...yet the boys got in...removed a two ton built in safe from an upper floor and got away with it. Millions involved. Now some might think an inside job...but perhaps just a really clever itinerant burglar?
