I would support MMBs view. I have lived here 16 years.

I have also never lived in OK. Why would one?

Because they are currently building more casinos than Nevada.

Oklahoma currently leads the nation in GDP growth and OKC may soon be the "Las Vegas" of the future.

Oklahoma is thriving in this economic downturn. Also they have an NBA team and Las Vegas don't.

^Perhaps. But Oklahoma doesn't have the hip, cool, sexy, international flavor of Vegas. Not yet, anyway.

But that's not why Oklahoma was brought up. The point is that Vegas is dirt cheap, especially compared to Illinois. I believe the intended the point of that comment is that only states like Oklahoma are cheaper.

One thing going for Las Vegas that is hard to beat is its geographical location in the Southwest. Aside from the usual gambling, Las Vegas location in the West Coast is one of its biggest asset.

Many travellers visit the Southwest and the location of Vegas gives it an edge for travellers visiting the States of AZ and UT together with the attractions in Southern CA. Overseas visitors flying in to LAX wishing to visit the National Parks in AZ and UT will have to pass Las Vegas, NV. Same goes for those visitors flying in to Phoenix and wishing to visit attractions outside of AZ.

Driving in and around the Southwest is one of best travel experiences out there. Overseas visitors from Europe have been doing the same thing here in the Southwest. My friends from Germany have visited a few times and we've always driven around visiting attractions here in the Southwest that are a short distance from Las Vegas. With proper planning Las Vegas officials can truly turn Las Vegas into a major hub for travel to attractions not only here in Las Vegas but also in Southern CA, AZ and UT. Our share of international travellers passing through McCarran is still low but that could change with the soon to open Terminal 3.

Echo the point that Las Vegas is a city where one can live quite inexpensively. Its why so many retirees have flocked there. Don't believe me? Check out the Orleans lunch buffet on I believe Tuesday where they offer a 2 for 1 senior buffet...........

If I was a retiree with say a $1500-2000 a month fixed retirement budget, Vegas is where I would live. Not only could one afford the basics of life on such a budget in Vegas, one could also sustain a significant level of entertainment and enjoyment on that income. Compare this to LA or OC where rent would decimate half or more of that income.

Well Oklahoma would certainly be preferable to the Dakotas...

They are not "thriving". They are surviving. The GDP growth is all driven by oil and they still trail NV substantially in GDP per capita.

How many tourists fly into OKC each year?

Farmgirlok...I came to Henderson from Ohio and it is almost exactly the same as far as bills go...Actually the only bill that was more was car insurance...We never had a 600 bill in the summer and had a pool...300 was the most our electric bill was and we can pay that in Ohio in the winter for gas...Trash was every 3 months in Las Vegas and Ohio is 42 a month for 4 pick-ups...To the person who started the post....just research very well as moving to Las Vegas is a big deal, but worth it if you can make it..We are returning soon as we left for personal reasons because we love it there and have many friends. There are jobs, just none that pay greatly right now..You can get something to get by until things start looking up in a year or so..When you post on here about moving, there are typically the same group that spell doom for Las Vegas and then the ones that love it here. Las Vegas is not done as Farmgirl has said, and it will be a lot better when 70,000 leave as it was 10 years ago before they came. Anyone that was there will tell you it was WAY better back then before it population blew up.....

Mjjudd gave you very good advice. I've moved from one end of the country to the other several times, always by myself. But never in a million years would I recommend moving SOMEPLACE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN. Where did you draw your ideas about what life in Las Vegas will be about? I certainly hope it wasn't movies and TV because you are sure to be disappointed, for no other reason than there aren't nearly as many flesh-eating demons as one would assume watching CSI.

Factors one can't even consider in advance may make a profound effect on one's quality of life. Will you be terribly allergic to something there? Can your body take the effects of dry air? Will you be able to handle the day to day challenges of life in an urban area if you don't have a lot of money? How much will you miss your really boring family?

Moving alone is not the problem. Moving with fantasy perceptions and not enough income IS the problem. I'm not saying you can never do it. In fact, I always encourage people to seek new experiences and ways of seeing the world. But it's foolhardy to do it with so little planning. Take a multi-week vacation in Las Vegas for starters -- and stay in a residential area on a very tight budget, not on the Strip throwing your savings around. Then come back and talk to us again.
