So I bought a jetski and trailer from a neighbor about 4 years ago here in California. They are registered and titled in NV. I never mailed in the title transfer, and now the title is lost. The jetski is easy enough to resolve; I was told just to mail 2 certified letters to the address the Dpt. of Wildlife has on the title for it, wait for them to get returned (which they will because the owners no longer live there), and have my BFF go to the DW office with a power of attorney to get the title in my name.

The trailer is a different story and I need some advice! It's titled and registered in NV under the previous owners name. Nevada DMV basically said "tough luck". I have no way of getting in touch with the previous owners, so they can't request a duplicate title. NV DMV said I could go to court and "petition the court for ownership", but I have no idea how to do that, not to mention I'm in coastal CA and can't take a trip to Vegas anytime soon (although it's tempting!).

Has anyone ever run across this before? Long story short: have vehicle, no title, not in my name and can't contact original owners. How do I fix this?

Sorry to be naive, but how do I do that? Is there a form somewhere for "petition of ownership" that I can fill out? What do I need to bring with me? All I have is the physical trailer. How does the process work? Can I file remotely, or do I need to file the form in person, and then come back for a court appearance? Or can I have a Power of Attorney handle all this? I tried contacting the courts for information and they won't help because they aren't allowed to give out legal advice. I won't hire a lawyer for this. The thing is only worth a couple hundred dollars, and I'd be paying out more in lawyer fees than what its worth.

Tried that. The salvage yards won't take it without a title. I even tried to donate it to Cars for Causes, and they won't take it without a title or a letter from the previous owners stating they sold it to me. Seriously, I'm about ready to just dump it somewhere and let the previous owners deal with it when they get fined. But I'm too nice and honest to do something like that.
