Another neat way to insulate, is to have a polyeurothane (bad spelling) sprayed on the attic ceiling, under the roof. I was in an attic that had this and it was quite cool in there on a hot day.
I am going to go the cheap route this summer and blow some extra insulation in my attic.

The report I linked to is a comprehensive retrofitting study conducted on a home I would imagine is similar to yours. Very data intense. Hopefully it will help you in some way.

It covers ROI for a number of technologies at the time. The data is a little old but should still be insightful.
I actually read the whole thing. And for anyone spending major dollars on a retrofit, it is great info. Thank you.

After reading that report, I think I am right on so far but I also need to insulate all the ducts. Radiant barrier would probably work for that. And I am eying my refrigerator. It came with the house and who knows how old it is.

One other thing I've read about..... It's new and I can't say it works but it's interesting.

It's exterior house paint with some kind of a ceramic insulator added.

Has anyone used this?

I've seen that done on new homes. It looks good.

Any idea how expensive it is?

I started getting some estimates on insulating my attic.

No wonder my electric was so high. The existing insulation in my attic is R9. Worse than I expected. Right now I'm planning on bringing it up to R48.

You can blow in the insulation yourself. It's pretty easy. It takes two people. One to go up in the attic with the hose and a helper to load the insulation into a machine that pumps it up to the attic. If you buy 5 or more bundles of insulation Home Depot lets you use the machine for free. The wife and I did it in our present home and went from about 10 inches of of insulation to 24 inches. It cost about $400, but I also got a tax credit when I filed, so that brought the effective price down to $280 or so. If your furnace/air unit is in the attic, just make sure you don't blow the insulation into it. I used some leftover plywood to block out an area around it. I also used the actual Dow fiberglass, not cellulose (that would have been much cheaper). Good luck.
