Can others tell me about UCF. I keep hearing about it. Is it a Las Vegas phenomenon? Why the interest?

It's a very well known mixed-martial arts fight organization. I wouldn't say it's a uniquely Las Vegas phenomena as the organization and its fighters are internationally recognized. The UFC is somewhat closely linked to Vegas for a couple of reasons - Las Vegas is considered the fight capital of the world (primarily boxing) and the majority owners of the UFC all have strong ties to Vegas. One of the UFC majority owners co-founded Station Casinos.

I love UFC...I think it's great the Las Vegas focuses on it, and always promotes it.

UCF however...I had to look that one up, University of Central Florida (I think it was)...would be weird if Vegas was into that

It's nothing unique to Vegas although big matches do happen here. Even back east, lots of people were fans.

I do notice that the Las Vegas Sun spends a lot more of it's sports page devoted to the UFC though, than anywhere else.

I think also because there is a lack of home professional teams to cover. Plus the fact so many of the events take place in Vegas.

I kinda like it.

I've watched every UFC since they began airing. Initially, as an American Kenpo student and instructor I was facinated by the more traditional styles being pitted against each other. UFC went dark for awhile, but then came back bigger than ever when they set up weight classes, implemented some basic rules to make it less "brutal" and got sanctioned.

Of course there's the Vegas connection with the Fertitta's but Vegas just makes sense. A ton of venues, rooms, flights, and who the hell doesnt want to come to Vegas and mix in a little debauchery along with watching the fight.

UFC has evolved a lot. I think I read somewhere that it was the fastest growing sport. The only negative is all the Tapout/ Affliction T-shirt wearing douches its spawned.
