I am sure that those of us who have been here a little while now have some things that we wish we would have known before we moved here. I thought we could share some of them and maybe spare the newbies some trouble

1. Nevada requires the Hep A vaccine. All kids need to be vaccinated to attend either pre school or regular school. It is a 3 shot series.

2. It does get quite chilly here in the winter. You will need a coat and sweaters.

3. Most movie theatres and bowling alleys are located inside casino's

4. If you want to venture down to the strip the hotels offer free parking in their garages. (I can't tell you how many times I paid to park before I discovered this)

5. Red Rock Casino has the BEST buffet in town. (ok, my opinion, but I had to throw it in)

6. If you are moving with school age children you want to be sure to bring copies of their stanine scores so that they can qualify for the gifted and talented programs.

7. If you are coming from MI eat your fill of Olga's, Coney Dogs, Bumpy Cake, and Sauders hot fudge before you come. You won't find any of that out here.

8. There are virtually no basements out here so if you even hope to park inside your garage you will probably want to rent a storage unit.

9. Lake Mead is beautiful and everyone should see it at least once but if you come from any of the Great Lake states you will be disappointed. (Even my lab was looking at me like I was joking)

10. You will want to have a monthly pest service. I have very squeamish girls and by having a pest service we have hardly seen anything although I did manage to get a rather nasty spider bite.

Anyone can feel free to contribute to the list. These are just the things off the top of my head that I could think of.

Well a few more...

You can park free at virtually all Casinos. Downtown you have to have your ticket validated at the Cashier in the Casino. Reasonably convenient in most.

Don't drive through water in a thunderstorm unless you have personal knowledge of the area. It is actually pretty rare to end up drowned but it is not rare to end up with a ruined car. Only takes 18 inches or so to float the car and then you are in trouble.

Ficus and citrus grow outside here but will die in a hard freeze which occurs every few years. Have to be protected if it gets below 32. Ficus is particularly fragile. Citrus gets trashed but recovers in the spring.

Wind can really blow...particularly in the spring. Anything not fastened down may take wing.

The movie theatres at Green Valley Ranch Casino in Henderson are nice in that you don't have to enter the Casino section to get to them. You can park at The District and enter the theatres directly on the lower level without having to parade past all the slot machines located on the main floor.

Neonopolis are the best theaters in town IMO - no casino to walk through, the latest technology, and you NEVER have to worry about not getting a good seat! Hopefully, they don't go bankrupt any time soon.

Great list! I have a couple questions though

1. Are there white castles in Nevada?

2. Is lake Mead big enough to ski on? If it's small I'm guessing there isn't enough room for courses but I'd be happy just being able to ski...

I've gotten a lot of great information from everyone on this board. I wish I had known about this site when I moved to Los Angeles!

Yes to water skiing.

Snow skiing at Mt. Charelston as well (that's my contribution, most don't know there's snow here)

Actually we had a world champion water skier die recently on Mead. Took a header while going 80 mph. At the time it is said he was waving for more speed but the boat was new and the Captain did not want to open it up fully yet.

So Mead is a very big lake. Not hugely wide but very long. 110 miles long when full. About 550 miles of coast line. Over 150,000 acres.

It is not the size of one of the great lakes...but then again ocean sailors consider those mere ponds...so it is all a matter of perspective.

Roaches. Add water to the desert and it growns roaches.

I have a question. Where in the world did 5kings find a lot on the Strip where she had to pay? About the only place in town where parking is not free is at the curb downtown, and in a couple of city run lots. This is the real reason why nobody ever leaves Las Vegas...they'd have to pay to park...if they could even find anyplace to park. Here ample parking is required for commercial buildings.

Lake Mead, until the late 60's or early 70's, was the largest man made lake in the world until Lake Nasser was built in Egypt. Now it is just the largest man made lake in the western hemisphere. We used to have high speed boat races out there with boats like the famous Miss Budweiser. On any big weekend like the 4th of July there will be over a quarter million people on Lake Mead and thousands of them will be skiing.

If you are coming here from West Virginia, eat your fill of hot dogs and pepperoni rolls before you leave because, as all West Virginians know, you won't find those here either.
