My family and I are moving to LV in October. We have had many suggestions on where to live and where not to live from people that have recently visited there.

We have been told to stay away from the housing right outside Nellis AFB and anything near the strip.

We are looking for an area that is safe (low crime), a great place to raise children, with great schools that teach in english.

Suggestions we have gotten is Summerlin, Henderson, and Northern LV (89131).

Any suggestions from anyone?

Every school teaches in English, unless you enroll in the Korean, Hebrew, or Spanish private schools...

Not always true; a number of the schools have come to rely on teachers whose primary language is NOT English and who may not have a great command of the language.

those teachers would still be teaching in English, even if it is with an accent.

There are some voluntary bilingual education programs that teach in both English and Spanish, but those are rare and very difficult to get into anyway. There is no way your kid will be accidentally enrolled in a non-English classroom.

To answer the original question, all of those are great areas. I'm sure Ole Capt. will come along and give you his school rankings link shortly. If not, look in another "I'm moving to LV" thread. If your potential school is in the top third of that list, you should be just fine. "Great" schools may not be available within the CCSD, but "Good" is definitely possible. There are of course other things to base where to live on, like where you'll be working. There are nice places to live on all sides of the Valley. Good luck!

Cite a source please. I follow that reasonably closely and I do not believe that is true. With the exception of a couple of very upscale schools doing a bi-lingual curriculum I know of no school not teaching primarily in English.

But educate us. Let's see a source...

In my post, I don't believe I said that the schools were offering bilingual education. What I said was that a number of schools had come to rely on teachers whose primary, or first, language was not English. I am aware of several schools that have hired teachers from the Philipines as math teachers, for example, and those teachers can have difficulties in English. This is particularly troubling at the elementary and middle school level, in my opinion.

Summerlin, Henderson, and North Vegas are all nice, and have good schools (compared to the rest of the valley, anyway).

Why should it matter whether or not a teacher's first language is not English? Whether or not they speak fluent English should be the only concern, and I can't believe that the school district, for all of its flaws, would fail to confirm fluency before hiring teachers.

My main concern is that the place we pick to live is one of the safest and fairly good schools. I hear most schools are not the greatest. But I for one are very invovled and will continue to be invovled in my childrens lives. Which I hope will be a big help.

The middle class and their children have embraced prole behavior; the credit/real estate/stock market bust will make them as poor as proles, so their income will match their culture.
I don't know if the bad economic times will be good or bad for the gaming industry; usually it's good, but this time.......
