Flaky Las Vegans
No, not the people who won't eat animal products, Las Vegans was all I could think of because I wasn't exactly sure what you all are called. But that is not important here. I am moving to Las Vegas August 15th. Yes, less than a month from now. My fiancee and myself are two college educated people, both with great credit, rental histories and job histories. Why won't anybody in this town return calls or e-mails??????? I have family in the area and they say it is due to the large transient population (in terms of people moving in and out of the city quite frequently). According to my realitives: landlords, employers, et. al. are hesitant of people with out of state addresses because so few of them actually end up making the move to Vegas. But for us, first in terms of landlords, I offer to send full deposit and first months rent to show my sincerity, still nothing. Second, in terms of employers, even when I use my aunt's Henderson address I still get nothing. I am applying for entry level positions with a Bachellor's degree and nearly 10 years expirience. What do I have to do to get people to take me seriously?? I am starting to get very stressed out! Thanks all-I'm really not a bitter person, I'm just nervous. The move is for sure, our making it is not.

I inquired about the Presido apartments recently, had a reply within 24 hours. Was in contact with 2 homeowners in March, one in Henderson and one in Summerlin. I was able to look at both homes on a weekend stay! I met the one couple and the other just gave me the keycode for the door and I just walked right in and checked out the place by myself, if you can believe that. Can you blame the employers who are not interested in out of state folks? Probablly 90% of the online applications are from people that never actually move there. I believe that if you go out for a week say, and hand out a bunch of resumes in person you will get a ton more hits. Ask for the person in charge of human resources, if they see you they are more opt to following up. It's sad to say but they really do need to see you to become interested. They don't know if you have ****ty skin or 12 fingers... I would do the same and employers do the same here aswell. I don't think that not replying to out of staters is "flaky" it's smart. Why should they waste their time on us if they have 2 million ready to go workers right in town? Time is money, and businesses are busy. Keep trying but I should hope you would dedicate a week out there to shake hands and get resumes out. Don't worry you guys will find something. As others have said here, allow ATLEAST a month and a half of living there without a job, that means paid for hotel, short term lease, extended stay whatever and I would say to be conservative have 5-10 grand in cash for all of the expenses, food, gas, car repairs, booze, some entertainment, and getting back home if need be, for the both of you. If you can afford to stay there for 1-2 months and just keep cranking out resumes, I don't see why you wouldn't have a job by the end, even if it was flipping pizzas or waiting tables just to get by for a little while longer till that REAL job comes along. Goodluck

Billie gets it mostly right in his stream of consciousness fashion.
You have a local l address now get a local phone number. A cellular will do it or use skype if computer literate.
If you know what kind of home you are after drop me a PM and I will get you fixed up. If you are simply after an initial base then Billies Presidio is a good bet.
As he said jobs here are easy. You got to work a bit for the good ones.
And cool a bit. It is pretty easy here. Just a little xenophobic.

As someone that reviews resume's, interviews applicants and hires n fires, let me throw my 2cents in....Both of you guys are right on the mark. Until a person actually has a body here in town we don't consider an applicant. We want a face to face interview, usually within 24-48 hours after we review the resume'. If we have to wait for you to decide when you're coming, we will move on to the next applicant. [ESPECIALLY for an entry level position]. That being said, MOST hotel properties are now heavily invested in the internet, to the point that every job they have to offer is posted on that hotels website......Check them out and be prepared to wade thru some unfriendly web pages to fill out the app. As far as being flaky.....yeh....we are.....when it comes to newcomers that havent spent their first summer in the desert. [attrition rate is pretty high because of the heat.

I can almost get a sense of your mental "stress"/anguish (to the thread starter). Let me tell you why: Wife and I and baby in tow have been in Las Vegas for a week, staying in a good friend's vacation home. I'm a physician (psychiatrist specialty) and I had to wait for nearly 5 months just for the Nevada Medical Board to issue my Nevada medical license. I was trained in Univ. of Virginia and if you can believe it, got my medical license there in 2 weeks (it kinda speaks about how "efficient" a certain governing institution is therefore). My wife, despite being a microbiologist, is nowadays taking care of our baby/full-fledged mommy . Despite being issued the license after 5 long months, I just found out I can't even get "salaried" here bec. of an office mandate that says I have to have my DEA license number (I believe it will take about a month for this to get). So yes, we are living on savings nowadays and it is pretty frustrating to:
1.) Not get started on the job (bec. I love my job)
2.) Not getting a real residence yet (mainly bec. we are playing it safe, not getting in any lease bec. "who knows" what will happen (i.e. another curve ball in the offing)
I'll tell you based on professional experience (and my philosophical input) that there are a lot of highly motivated/career and-or financially successful persons that are desirous of a level of security or sense of certainty (like persons with strong obsessive-compulsive traits) and will go to great lengths to ensure having it. Thus when the comfort level is "rattled" by real world issues (of course the world is unfair lol), the mental anguish can be quite a strain. I will tell you that it has been my experience like that since coming here and shunning three other employers with similar, if not superior financial compensation benefits. But also, it has been a good learning experience once again to "know thyself" and the world and that it's another day in life......
Good luck thread starter and may the next day be different for you (as it has been for us everyday). You are not alone in anguish as well.

Yep...That's the same experience we had when we moved to Vegas from Phoenix. I had transferred to Vegas with my employer and my wife tried to get a job lined up in Vegas before giving up the one she had in Phoenix. No luck at all for six months, even though I was already settled in Vegas with my job and had a local address my wife had no luck getting an interview since she wasn't actually living in Vegas at the time.
She finally resigned from her job in Phoenix, joined me and the unemployed in Vegas. She started getting interviews right away and had a job in less than two months after moving up here.

See kthei, 2 months probablly worse case scenerio. You would have blown maybe $3000 a piece to live there that long? No biggie. And if your not picky, you could get any type of job just to hold yourself over from going broke and insane.

Hey Rawg...hope you hang around after you become gainfully employed. We need counseling around here periodically.
It can get repetitious particular as it is clear nobody ever reads the old threads before starting a new one. And I know I can't resist a needle once in a while...even when I should not.
So pop in once in a while and keeps us going toward the humane side.

Thanks for all the positive comments so far guys...I need to hear them sometimes. I have this feeling like I know everything is going to be fine, but I also know everything is going to be really hard for a while too.
