Default Bus service - Las Vegas to Ely

I'm trying to get to Ely as cheaply as possible in mid-June. I will be flying into Las Vegas and am hoping to find bus service to there. Does anyone know of any options? Thanks

Now there's a good question. Greyhound might go there and the station is next door to (attached to, actually) The Plaza Hotel on Main St. I just don't ever remember seeing any buses on the highway to Ely, and honestly I don't think there is any kind of public transportation between Las Vegas and Ely. I looked on the internet and couldn't find anything except a discussion about whether the government should subsidize a commuter flight between the two. It is a very desolate 300 mile trip, and takes five or six hours by car, depending whether you stop for food and gas. I think you're going to have to rent a car, find a friend to take you, or don't go.

Unfortunatly, the only option is the prison bus . There used to be bus service provided by Ely Buss in Ely (775-289-2877), but due to budget cuts, they cut all out of town bus service a couple of years ago. I put their number there so you can call and check just in case. We do have commuter flight service, but it no longer goes to LV. Its ran by Great Lakes Airlines and flys out of Denver. Thats the only transit option outside of renting a car or getting a ride.

When I came back from Ely this summer, I noticed a couple of commercial buses, but I'm not sure if they were shuttling tourists up to Great Basin Nat'l Park or wherever. I wish I could remember the bus line, but it had a spanish name. I've seen this same bus line in my other travels in the SW.

Always check with the local Latin Bus lines, they might be of help, but you might need to know some Spanish. My Mexican roommate uses these.

I know in downtown Houston they have two terminals side by side, one is a big latin bus depot, the other Greyhound, both competing, some with different or similar destinations.

Unfortunately, we haven't become as civilized as Central America, where even in rural areas, you don't have to stand by the road very long, and there's a chicken bus coming along, or you can hop in the back of a pick-up, both of which I've done while down there. And you have the vendors hopping on and off, along the way, selling everything from A to Z. Never, will you ever go hungry! One vendor may even be selling Tylenol PM's. Take one and sleep the rest of the way!

The buses you see on 93 are almost all charter buses from Canada. They like to bring hoards of elderly down from Alberta and BC to Vegas. They stop here in Ely for lunch at the McDonalds, thats about it. There's no Greyhound or other commercial bus service. Really the only option is the airline I mentioned above, but they want $140-300 per ticket each way. Its too bad, because when the plane used to fly in from McCarran, it was only about $50 each way. I took it often when it was here.

Ely is one of those places that you can't get to from here

Well, if you're still looking to get up here, Great Lakes Airlines is now flying out of McCarren Int'l to Ely.

Great Lakes Airlines

Outside of renting a car, it's the only way. Keep in mind there is also no taxi service in town either, so unless you know someone in town, rent the car.
