Default Shooting

I haven't been out shooting in the desert for several years. In the olden days (as my kid calls it) we could just go out W. Charleston to anywhere around Sahara, or up toward the base of the red rocks, and shoot up the place. Right where my house is now was a good place to hunt rabbits. Or we'd go up on the backside of Sunrise (Frenchman) Mountain, or out Lake Mead Drive in Henderson toward the lake and blast the heck out of cans and bottles. People used to shoot rats in the garbage when the area around Hollywood Blvd was the local garbage dump (unofficially). Also on the south end of Sunrise over near the swamp there were lots of good places. In fact we used to hunt ducks in the swamp. My buddy and I would hunt rabbits on the road to Pahrump from a moving jeep until guilt set in and I realized that killing animals was bad. There was never any fear of hitting anyone out in the boonies back then though. Hardly no one lived in Pahrump and no cars ever came along. There were cotton fields all over down there that the farmers would let you hunt quail in for a small fee. But now there's no place to go that I know of to shoot that isn't off limits. Does anyone know of a good place that the sheriff hasn't posted? Mo'lady wants me to teach her to shoot. I taught her once and she's forgotten everything. Shooting paper targets on a range ain't no fun. I like to murder a bunch of cans. Nothing like bouncing a can along the ground while shooting it with a semi auto .22 rifle from the hip. It used to impress my kid anyway.

I hope you get a response to this. My husband would like to know, too.

Isn't hunting allowed on state/federal land here? Couldn't you get a small game permit and set up some rabbit shaped targets? ;-)

Lately, it seems like casinos, such as The Palace Station, seem to places where people shoot in LV!

I live in the Northwest area, and I drive north on the 95 past Indian Springs. There's some dirt roads off to the west that I use to find a spot. There are some nice dirt burms that keep your rounds from going astray. I can't remember the exact details or milage after Indian Springs, but I want to say it takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the turn off after I pass the last bits of civilization. The turn off is very easy to see. It's as wide as a car and looks like it gets maintained once in a while. I haven't been there in over a year, but it is outside of Clark County and as far as I know, shooting is legal outside of Clark County.

I remember all of those places you described. When I was a kid, my dad and I shot everywhere, almost all of those areas now have homes. Anymore, I just go to an indoor range. The last time I went to an indoor range, there were gangster wannabees shotting sideways at the targets and not being very safe or smart at all. The owners didn't seem to mind much either. A bit of advice about shooting outdoors, keep a loaded gun on your person at all times, my uncle is a detective with Metro and has told us of stories where people have been robbed while they were reloading. The area I described does get traffic, but I have never seen or heard anyone out there when I have been there.

Thanks. I'd like to not have to pay to shoot. I like to get out in the desert away from other people but Indian Springs is a long way to go. I guess that's another negative aspect of Nevada getting Californicated.

I remember it taking close to 1 1/2 hours to get there. Unfortunately Clark County does not allow any outdoor shooting within county limits unless you are at a range. The good ol days of going twenty minutes from the house are gone.

Buzz,

You can a ways north of the indian reservation on 95. I call it the badlands, an area you can see from 95 where the ground is a series of small ridges. There are a couple of dirt roads down into the area. If you stay in the ravines, it is about as safe to shoot as anywhere. It's about 10 miles north of Kyle Canyon if I remember correctly (haven't been out there in a couple of years)

The place is littered with debris so my suggestion would be just to use the junk that is already there as to bringing more out. Of course, if you do bring cans out, please pick them up after you are finished.

I've been told that there is a map the county has that has a "red line" on it defining where shooting is off limits in the county, but I've asked various officials and no one will admit to it.

Edited to add: I've just read the post above mine (I was making this one when it was posted.) Although the county may not allow shooting on "county" property, I believe the blm does allow shooting on it's property with the exception of certain areas.

There is a map available for viewing at the County Clerk's Office. There is also a legal description of the area in the County Code but that is indeciplerable without a days work

The Clerk's site appears to be down. I will query if the come up as to whether the map is available on line.

I would also note that Clark County is building a world class shooting park out at the north end of decatur. I believe they have broken ground.

Thanks, I'll check the site when it's back up.

Also, you are right, as far as I know, ground has been broken for the new shooting park. I think it's supposed to open in 2008. BTW, Harry Reid is one of the prime movers behind this, so those people who think the Dems will block the shooting park should rest easy. Now, our own parks people...that's another story.
