My guess is you would see no more than 10Mbps if you had DSL only.
You are correct 10 is tops. 59.95 for phone and 10mbs I guess not a bad deal.

These days I think most DSL modems can auto-configure, and usually get it correct.

I'll be back in LV tomorrow night and can check my settings. I believe the settings on mine are 8/35 for VPI/VCI, and DHCP (not PPPoE, this part I'm sure of). Is that all you need? If you can't wait, do a search in the Embarq/Centurytel forum on dslreports.com.
Thanks, I'll try that. My DSL modem is 10 years old so I doubt it auto anythings ;-). It also won't get beyond 8 Mbps even if the line supports it, according to the product specs.

This is the free wireless router they gave me that I don't actually use, I just plugged it in because I couldn't figure out how to get to the web configuration page of my basic DSL modem when it is in bridge mode (actually, I don't think there is a way to get in to the web configuration page when it is in bridge mode, I think you have to reset it back to router mode).

AT&T doesn't serve residential phone customers in Las Vegas. CenturyLink (formerly Embarq, formerly Sprint's residential service), is the local exchange carrier.

Wonder if anyone could look over the settings I'm putting in. THis is on an 11-yr old Alcatel Speedtouch Home ADSL modem. I'm not in Vegas yet, but should be there Sunday night, and the DSL service is supposed to be already turned on by today.

Under Initial Setup tab
IP address: none
Subnetmask: none

Phonebook tab
Name: EMBARQ
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Type: bridge (other option is pptp)

Bridge tab
under Bridging Ports, I made one entry:
Bridge port: EMBARQ
Encap: LLC/SNAP
FCS: NO
State: forwarding (other option is disabled or learning)

DHCP tab
Chose "No DHCP" radio button

DNS tab
Server active: checked
Domain name: lan

The manual says the default IP address is 10.0.0.138, so I've logged into the modem's web page at that address to change the settings above.

I do plan to put a router behind it. I believe with the DHCP setting off, either a router or PC I plug into the DSL modem should grab the dynamic IP address. I understand the DSL modem should be in "transparent bridging" mode, but not sure if I've set the configuration above properly for that.

Default The Lies of Cox Cable

We were promised a $100 rebate for trying out one of Cox's 'bundles' upon our initial sign up; phone, tv, internet. We were told it would cost $107, and that we would get a $100 rebate on that charge after 30 days.

Lie #1:
About 3 weeks in to the service, we saw that we weren't using the phone at all, and rarely looking at the tv. I called and spoke with someone who said that we could cancel that part of the service, but that they would keep the service on for the full 30 days, so we could get the rebate. Well, the next day those services were disconnected and we were credited for a partial months service.

Lie #2:
My wife and I stopped into the Cox store to try and straighten this out, and return the equipment we were no longer using (for which we had very quickly received an additional $400+ charge on our bill), and were advised that there wasn't anything they could do about it. The girl did call someone in 'customer service' who promised that they filled out the rebate paperwork for us and that we would hear from someone in 2 days to confirm that fact. Never happened.

Lie #3:
I called Cox 3 times yesterday and was disconnected each time after waiting to speak with someone who could 'escalate' the matter. Each time, I heard a different story about this rebate. "the rebate requires a 2 year commitment." "the rebate requires a 90 day trial." "we don't qualify because the service was terminated early." Of course we heard none of this (in the first 2 cases) from the sales department in the beginning, because we would never make such a commitment. While the service was terminated early, it was not what we were told was going to happen when we called.

The level of apparent confusion and/or dishonesty on the part of the Cox staff is astonishing to us, and we wonder how their policies seem to be so little understood, varying widely from employee to employee?

Without information to the contrary, we can only surmise that the Cox policy is to have their employees say anything to sell these upgrades/bundles, and then say anything to avoid holding up their end of the bargain.

You forgot, "formerly 'Centel', and Central Telephone Company of Southern Nevada".

Did you know that it was once a long distance call to Henderson and Boulder City?

We have a Cox phone, internet, cable TV bundle. With the exception that digital always has problems analog didn't, we get good service. (Of course TV stations used to go off the air a lot, and also lose their microwave signals from the networks, but that's another story). Any technical problems or complaints we've had with Cox have been handled immediately, and I love the internet speed. Phone saves me a lot of money too. I have an inborn hatred of cable TV from dealings with cable companies when I worked in local TV stations, but it's love-hate since I need all 7,000+ channels I guess.

You guys have weak cable packages. I get over 13000 channels. There is nothing like cracking open a beer after work and watching the Albanian news channel.
