However this one line kind of shocked me....

About 71 percent of all Las Vegas visitors in 2010 were older than 40, with the average age at about 49.

Is Las Vegas becoming another Branson, MO????
Seriously...is Las Vegas losing the younger crowd????

The Las Vegas strip has taken decades to build and Billions of dollars to construct. Many states have legalized gambling (casinos) but no other state has anything like the Las Vegas strip. Given the current state of the economy no developer anywhere is going to spend the Billions of dollars anytime soon required to even come close to replicating the Las Vegas strip, especially considering gaming revenues are at historic low's.

Couple that with it's proximity to LA, making it a very attractive weekend destination for LA residents (and especially headliners who can take fly in on a private jet in less than an hour, do a weekend show, make some quick $$$ and be back home to LA in another hour) and you have a durable competitive advantage that will not be replicated anytime soon.

Las Vegas is the original. Las Vegas has decades of "brand recognition" driving it. The vegas strip is driven by much more than just gamblers. Many non gamblers travel to Las Vegas to "see the strip", take in the shows, etc.

Las Vegas is to gaming and entertainment what Coca Cola is to Soda, McDonalds is to fast food, Budweiser is to beer and Microsoft is to operating systems. It's something that cannot be replicated with mere money. And even if it could, it would not happen in this economy anytime soon.

Good points about how insignificant competition has proven. If you watch Lakers games they have lots of ads for "big time entertainment just 67 miles from Staples Center" which is for San Manuel casino. Within 90 miles there are a plethora of Vegas-style casinos. Sure there are no dice or sports books, but for the most part the same thing most people want to play. Yet Vegas seems more popular with So Cal than ever. Phoenix area is an even better example, there are eight major casinos within 45 minutes drive of Downtown and they are as ubiquitous in advertising as lawyers are in Vegas. Yet everyone I know in Phoenix is up in Vegas at least 2 or 3 times a year.

So Florida is supposed to be a threat? Come on, get real.

all that these other venues do is to expose more people to casino gaming that have never been to vegas.....then they want to come here to see how "It's REALLY done"....

Unlike the sewer by the sea, Florida has more going for it than AC or Vegas. You would be ignorant to think otherwise. Look at how Pennsylvania allowing gambling has affected AC.

You are right about the voting thing though, lol

And how much of that which took "decades to build" was imploded and rebuilt in the last 10-15 years? Pretty much any property making money has been built since the mid 90's. Look at the decades old places like the Sahara (closing), Riviera (next), Circus Circus and some of the older places like Flamingo and Tropicana just hanging on.

It's not the buildings that took decades to build it's the reputation, the image. There is much more at play than the simple bricks and mortar aspect of the Las Vegas strip. When people think "gaming" "entertainment" they think Vegas. Stop 10 people on the street anywhere in the country and ask them to name the number 1 destination for gambling in the US. I bet every one would say "Las Vegas". That image, that competitive advantage, is what took decades to build. Becoming the leader in an entire industry takes years (often times decades) to build. As in my last example even if you had billions of dollars to build the brand image of your product you could not come close to replicating the brand image of the most established companies in their given field like Coca Cola, McDonalds, or the "Las Vegas Strip".

The billion dollar cost to build a casino that would come close to competing with a proper, modern Las Vegas Casino is another aspect of the competitive advantage that Las Vegas holds over any other gaming destination in the country.

True, most of the modern Casino's have been build in the last 20 years (in the 90's, when the economy was much stronger than it is today). The fact that developers are willing to tear down the old casino's and spend hundreds of millions or even billions to build new casino's in the same location only solidifies my point - sure, they could go somewhere else where land is cheap but, they build in Vegas to "cash in" on the fact that Las Vegas is THE gaming destination of the US.
