I went to the Tropicana last night for the first time in almost five years to check out the recently opened Las Vegas Mob Experience. I had heard from a couple of people that that the new owners of the Trop had pumped some money into the place and made some improvements.

I was stunned by how nice the place looked. It had been on my list of places not worth setting foot in but no more. Congratulations to the new owners for breathing some life into a building that not long ago had only one advantage: location. I hesitate to use the word "upscale" to describe the feel of the place, but I've eliminated my former description of "dive."

It is a phenomenal change from the dark, dingy place it used to be, isn't it?

So, how did you like the Mob Experience? I haven't made it over there yet.

The Mob Experience was very entertaining, I thought - lots of exhibits, personal memorabilia from Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, etc., and some interactive features that might seem a little corny but that I found enjoyable. If you're at all into mob history - or Las Vegas history, for that matter - it's worth a visit.

hmmm...I'll have to re-check it out next time I'm there. I also wrote this place off as a dive, based on my last few times in there (very smoky, rugs worn, old feel) and felt the only thing probably keeping it going was the location and the pools (I think they still have swim up blackjack?) Anyway, it was the very first place I stayed in LV back in 1993...and it was worn then. My room had a beautiful view...of a roof-top A/C unit! I didn't complain...as the room was free, and being my first trip in LV, I wasn't in there much.

I haven't been inside The Trop for about ten years, but I don't ever remember "The Tiffany of the Strip" being dark and dingy. The pic posted above doesn't look any different. But it was a nice place even before they added that ceiling many years ago.

They recently advertised a good deal on lobster and a lot of free play for joining their slot club. I would probably enjoy the mob experience so I will have to go check it out.
