I heard that living in Nevada, home owners typically spray their homes for bugs/pests yearly or more often.

Can all you homeowners out there tell me what exactly are you spraying for?

How often do you spray? Can you stay in the home during/immediately after the application?

How much should it cost, and any companies you can recommend in the Las Vegas area?

TIA.

I used to have Orkin come and spray monthly, and I'm convinced they have no interest in eliminating your bug problems. They keep it under control, but don't eliminate it so you keep paying them to come out. When I finally tried to get rid of the bugs (ants in my case) myself, I used Terro, which is basically boric acid mixed with a little sugary syrup, and I haven't seen an ant in two years.

As soon as you irrigate landscaping in a desert that does not freeze you establish an environment favorable to cockroaches. Anytime you don't believe it just leave a piece of wet cardboard overnight near your landscaping.

So you spray once a month to keep them under control.

We avoid spraying inside to protect the furred ones.

We have Terminix which took over from the previous company. They believe that spraying every other month around the outside of the home is enough. They will only spray inside if you have an infestation of some kind, or ask them to. We mainly spray to keep the German Roaches out. I rarely see one inside. Once in a while I see a silverfish, and now and then ants will show up indoors. You'll find house spiders that, I believe, are mostly after dust mites, and other small, harmless, critters that get past the bug spray barrier outside. You'll find that Nevada is very short on bugs, but what we have are an inconvenience, and convenience is what Nevada in General, and Las Vegas in particular, is about. Don't get too excited about bugs in Las Vegas. Almost anywhere you have ever been has had millions more bugs than we ever get. Note that fleas don't live in the desert, and mosquitoes are rare. Flies can be a slight nuisance too, at times. Black widows mostly live outside in bushes and other dark places, are not aggressive, but you gotta watch where you put your fingers because of them. But don't get too worried about insects in Las Vegas. The lack of pests is one more of the pleasures of living in Las Vegas.

My entire family uses a company called Dr. Death Pest Control. It's a one man operation, so if you have a problem, you are talking to the owner / technician. I was actually impressed with him so much, I recommended him to my parents, plus my brother and sister. My brother in law then referred him to his parents. Being ex military myself, I liked that he was a Marine before going into the pest business. When I was looking into buying a house, he was actually a pretty good resource about places to avoid since I work midnights. I don't have his number handy, but look him up if you still need someone.
